CROSSOVER: MAN FROM UNCLE/SAPPHIRE AND STEEL
Title: The Reality Affair by Jill Sylvan (G)
Pairing: None
Length: 85K
Author on LJ: Don't think so
Author Website: Unknown
Why this story must be read:
OK it's Crack Van Collision Day - and I have a confession to make. *takes deep breath* I'm not a big crossover fan. *cowers and shields soft parts from incipient blows from outraged fans* There. I've said it.
IMO it isn't easy to sustain the characteristic attributes of more than one fandom simultaneously. One of them can so easily be diminished in stature by becoming a mere plot device to service the other. The result can then feel unbalanced. Alternatively the need to lay equal emphasis on more than one universe can become unwieldy, with pairings/canons vying with each other for attention. It must be said, however, that some authors are such stars that they never fall into these traps and produce stunning fanfic that melds together several fandoms seamlessly.
I'll leave you to judge which category this falls into...
Oh BTW, you probably need to be particularly warm and fluffy (whatever substance you use to achieve this feeling) before embarking on this one - and have the Kleenex handy...

When I first read The Reality Affair it was solely from an S&S perspective. I'd just come across Jill Sylvan's excellent transcripts of that series and wanted to see how her fanfic developed from the series' scripts. I have to say that I was a wee bit underwhelmed when I read TRA back then. There seemed to be far too little interaction between Sapphire and Steel (damn - another secret vice of mine revealed...). At that time I probably didn't pay close attention to the MFU element of the story as it seemed to get in the way of what I wanted to read. What a difference a year makes...
So - fast forward twelve months. I re-read TRA a few weeks ago - and sniffled my way through half a box of Kleenex. How could I have been underwhelmed before? The interaction between Illya and Napoleon is spot on (in a gen rather than a slashy way unfortunately), the plot's well-developed, the bits from the S&S universe work so much better than I remembered and the ending - *sobs*. Well - actually there are two. Endings that is. Since this is a rec (yes - I've just remembered what my role is here...) I strongly recommend you to stick with the first (if you can bear it) as the second one (avoiding the D-word) just doesn't cut the mustard for me.
