Why this must be read: Because this story will break your heart into tiny pieces, then melt said pieces and make you a completely new heart that is infinitively more beautiful than your old one!
Those of you who looked at all my recs this month might have discovered a certain pattern in the fics I love: shortish first-time stories with an emphasis on the humor. Well, this one is completely different and quite possibly the exception that proves the rule. This story is heartbreaking and deals with serious issues like prejudices, harrassment and a brutal gay-bashing. Jim and Blair suffer as an out gay couple in the police, but they do it in true TS style, are perfectly in character and overcome all adversity.
It also focuses more on the Sentinel/Guide aspect than most of the other stories this month and again, it's very skillfully done. It's a great, great story.
Simon stood, unsure. He hadn't seen Jim this upset since his divorce - and that had been a *good* thing.
If it was anyone else he would go over and lay a hand on his shoulder, tell him it was going to be alright.
A few months ago he would have done that to Jim.
{I'm being ridiculous.} Simon told himself. }He's still the same old Jim.}
But he didn't take those steps. After a long pause Jim stood and stared at him, the soft blue eyes sad.
"I'm sorry sir. I won't bother you again." he left before Simon had a chance to object.
Jim sat at the table in the conference room, reading files, gathering the information, dreading Blair's arrival, a new pain growing in him.
He'd lost Simon. Possibly his best friend...Simon couldn't handle it any longer.
Now he and Blair were truly alone in hostile territory.I alone
