Why this must be read:
Sam remembered Dean dying very quietly, despite everything he knew had actually happened. He could see in his mind (and did, over and over) how Dean had twisted and fallen open at the seams, his mouth stretched open in pain and panic, but everything in the memory was utterly, obscenely silent.
There have been some wildly imaginative, and of course terribly painful stories dealing with Dean’s return from Hell and this is one of my favourites.
Fire or fire opens six months after Sam has saved Dean from Hell. Sam doesn’t remember how he did it, and Dean is still profoundly damaged. And then people in Oklahoma start spontaneously combusting, and somehow it’s all tied together.
The audacious device used in this story is that Dean doesn’t speak - Dean, who is defined on screen and in fic, by his words whether snarky, angsty or angry. It is a testament to the author that the silent broken Dean in this fic is still eloquent in many ways.
Sam in this story is both strong and Dean’s protector, while struggling with his own confusion and vulnerability. At this story's core is the most wonderful portrayal of the very essence of Sam and Dean’s relationship.
In addition, this story has a plot that will have you guessing until the end and a brilliant supporting cast including Bobby, Ellen, Jo, Bela in a surprising role, and a dog called Elwood.
