Time To Move On by Sharpiesgal (PG)

Fandom: NCIS
Pairing: Leroy Jethro Gibbs/Donald 'Ducky' Mallard (just - mostly team-fic gen)
Length: 726
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] sharpiesgal
Author Website: None of which I am aware.

Why this must be read:

Even before Judgment Day aired there were lots of stories 'predicting' what might happen; and once it had aired there were even more.

This is short but one of the best I have read. It takes canon and very simply provides an alternate ending to it - a much better ending, IMHO.

Although there is a pairing, it is all off-screen and in fact the story could easily, by avoiding one or two words, be read as purely friendship, especially as the focus is a team-fic.

Chris manages in so few words to cram a mixture of emotion into the story: it made me smile and it made me (it still makes me) sniffle. It shows us, if we needed showing, the important part Gibbs and Ducky play in the lives of 'the children' and what in turn they mean to the older men. It shows us they are Gibbs's team through and through and it shows us the characters we so clearly see on the screen. Mutual friendship, devotion, affection, caring, love and so much more is in this little story. Team Gibbs wins the day.

Gibbs sat on the bed and watched Ducky get ready for Jenny’s memorial service. It would be a somber day for both of them since they had decided to inform the children that they were retiring from NCIS.

“Do you think they will think we are abandoning them?” he inquired as Ducky took his hand and gently pulled him from the bed.

“Jethro,” Ducky sighed. “It’s time for you to stop being everybody’s savior. It’s time for the children to stand on their feet.”

Gibbs nodded and escorted Ducky downstairs and to the car.
