[livejournal.com profile] crack_van was born five years ago today, the same week I finished reading an admittedly awesome and epic LOTRIPS fanfic which was later revealed to me to feature not the scruffy, greasy haired actors of human characters, but tiny-statured, squishy-faced hobbit actors instead. HORRORS. My hunger for new fandoms was well and truly piqued, but I was determined not to wander blindly down any more dark alleys; I would make all of fandom my bitch, spoon feeding me the tastiest fics with handy visual aids. And lo! My evil plan, it worked. Muahahahaha!!!

Thanks for your hard work. I've certainly had a chance to read some wonderful stories through this community---some in fandoms that I wouldn't have sought out without being tempted by the recs left here.

Name: Phae
Age: late 30s.
Active fandoms:
Anime/Manga: Bleach, Saiyuki, Prince of Tennis, Weiss Kreuz, Ai no Kusabi Howl's Moving Castle
Books: Lawrence Durrell's Alexandria Quartet, Jane Austen, Johanna Sinisalo's The Troll
Movies and TV Shows: Tim Burton's "Sleepy Hollow", CBC's The Border: 1st season, old musicals.
Past fandoms: Harry Potter, Full Metal Alchemist, ancient past fandoms: Lloyd Alexander's Prydain series, Tolkein, Anne McCaffrey's Dragon... series, Isaac Asimov's Foundation trilogy, Robert Silverberg's Majhipoor series, Chronicles of Narnia.
Fandom interests: Good fanfic (mainly slash or yaoi) and fanart, especially art and fic which achieves its own independence from the original material through the quality of the work. I often like these more than the original works.
Fandom dislikes: badfic, wank
My LJ mostly contains: fanfiction, real life ramblings, picspam (behind a cut), nonfiction essays and critiques, occasional recs, once in a blue moon rants.
Link to your favorite of your own fanfic, fanart, or fandom projects (or pimp someone else's!):

Thank you for [livejournal.com profile] crack_van! (out of curiosity, what lotrips fic was it that you read?) I've found a lot of awesome recs here. Even in fandoms that I'm active in, there are little gems that slip through the cracks sometimes. Why are there no comments on this entry yet?

Name: Tabby
Age: 28
Active fandoms: bandom, Harry Potter, Supernatural, Shelter, Criminal Minds, Chronicles of Narnia
Past fandoms: lotr (& lotrips), Queer as Folk, popslash, Lost, Latter Days, Jericho,
Fandom interests: (I'm not sure how to answer this) fic, news, gossip, picspams, whatever. I pretty much just like being in fandom and having friends to share my squee with.
Fandom dislikes: wank, high school drama
My LJ mostly contains: a mix of real life and fandom -- right now there is a LOT of bandom stuff on there and a bunch of whiny real life posts.
Link to your favorite of your own fanfic, fanart, or fandom projects (or pimp someone else's!): My favorite fanfic:
Reciprocity (http://community.livejournal.com/slashfest/96971.html) \\ Criminal Minds \\ Morgan/Reid \\ One night changes the direction of Reid and Morgan's friendship.

(and a link to all my fanfic: here (http://why-me-why-not.livejournal.com/314424.html))

Name: rabbit, rabidsamfan, hey you!, queen of WIPS
Age: As old as my tongue and a little bit older than my teeth.
Active fandoms: Sherlock Holmes is leading the pack at the moment, but that doesn't mean I've abandoned any of the others, especially not The New Avengers (TV, not comic.)
Past fandoms: Heaven help you... among others: Alias Smith and Jones, Star Trek: TOS, Doctor Who, Blake's 7, Lord of the Rings (which isn't really past), Harry Potter (ditto), Jonny Quest, the Muppets, Hetty Wainthropp, The Wild Wild West, Mission Impossible, Man from UNCLE, Streets of San Fransisco, Pern, a great deal of Mercedes Lackey, Hardy Boys, Discworld, Lord Peter Wimsey, Honor Harrington, Starsky and Hutch, Emergency!... er... you get the idea, right? Old TV shows and books!
Fandom interests: Alternate universes, crossovers, WIPS, cliffhangers, drabbles and other fixed length-fics, anything shiny that catches my eye.
Fandom dislikes: one true anything, real-person fic.
My LJ mostly contains: Maundering, occasional drabbles and fics (most of which are linked through the memories section for the earlier stuff, and I'm figuring out tags...)
Link to your favorite of your own fanfic, fanart, or fandom projects (or pimp someone else's!): Oh, lordy... My favorite is usually the most recent, but I'll admit I'm still pretty proud of Balance (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/599029/1/Balance) which I started just after I saw the Balrog on screen and thought it would be interesting to see what the folks at Hogwarts would make of it. I didn't finish it till shortly before book 7, though, which tells you a lot more about me than I should probably admit!

Hi, had to comment on your reply. Ohhh, Alias Smith and Jones! How I wept when Peter Deuel died; I couldn't believe he'd go like that. All the rest of the shows were not the same, but I've read a fanfic or two that really hit the mark, characterwise. Westerns are alive and well, even on ffn. And crack_van recently featured Wild, Wild West, great.

Ooh I forgot to say happy birthday. I love this comm, it has introduced me to so many authors.

[identity profile] sineala.livejournal.com 2008-09-21 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
Name: Elena
Age: 27
Active fandoms: The Professionals. Within the past month it appears to have eaten my brain, and I love it to pieces. I also post a fair amount about most of my past fandoms, because it's not like I've *stopped* liking them, you know? So, really, expect anything. But mostly Pros, because OMG Bodie and Doyle are in love. Squee squee squee.
Past fandoms: Due South, The Sentinel, Star Trek (TOS and TNG), Babylon 5, Battlestar Galactica (I say stuff about it when it's airing, honest), House, X-Files, X-Men, Stargate SG-1/SGA, Buffy, Firefly, Starsky & Hutch, Pern, probably Doctor Who counts, a bit of Highlander, Harry Potter, Phoenix Wright, Psych... and probably more I'm not thinking about. Lots of SF/F and queer stuff. Oh! and the Night Watch/Day Watch series! How could I forget?
Fandom interests: Slash (m/m and f/f), vids, good meta. I think primarily my tastes run toward old-school slash, which I love in a completely serious, non-ironic detachment-y wholehearted kind of way. 700k AU undercover!gay h/c fuck-or-die epics? Bring it on! I mean it! Also, I am the sort of person who OTPs. Deeply. I guess I am oldschool, huh?
Fandom dislikes: RPF, incest, het.
My LJ mostly contains: These days, mostly Pros squee and RL blithering. Very very very occasionally, fic and vids. My fannish posts tend toward show-specific discussion. I snark a fair amount. I threaten to make a lot of vids and fic I then fail to actually finish. No, really, I'm awesome.
Link to your favorite of your own fanfic, fanart, or fandom projects (or pimp someone else's!): The best thing I've made (and yes, it was 2002 but I still haven't topped it) is Sorry (http://sineala.livejournal.com/321811.html), a strange and sort of funny exploration of Mulder/Krycek in vid form.

Happy Birthday!

This comm has been responsible for turning me on to a lot of great fic in fandoms I don't really follow. And it's been responsible for getting me into a few fandoms as well.

Thank you for your hard work in maintaining the community!

Happy birthday! I love seeing what other people are reading, and I especially love the descriptions of why people love the stories they rec.

Name: Pargoletta
Age: 32
Active fandoms: Romeo and Juliet, Death Note
Past fandoms: Um . . . none, at the moment.
Fandom interests: Lively characters, courageous authors, bold situations.
Fandom dislikes: Timidity, pettiness.
My LJ mostly contains: Fic, commentary on bizarre current events, and snarky notes about the life of a grad student (that would be me).

Active fandoms: Doctor Who, Man from U.N.C.L.E., The Middleman, Sapphire and Steel, Sherlock Holmes, The Prisoner, Danger Man, The Avengers, Lord Peter Wimsey, The X-Files.
Past fandoms: That about covers it! I'm sure I'm forgetting something huge.
Fandom interests: Plotty genfic with excellent characterisation and plenty of explosions, convoluted discussion of minutiae, shiny picspams.
Fandom dislikes: Character-bashing.
My LJ mostly contains: Fanfic, recs, fannish discussions, ramblings about research and RL.
Link to your favorite of your own fanfic, fanart, or fandom projects (or pimp someone else's!): I enjoyed writing Bright Star (http://eponymous-rose.livejournal.com/147298.html), a cross-era Who fanfic. Bonus rec: The Boy Who Killed Time (The Last Love Song Remix) (http://rosa-acicularis.livejournal.com/16804.html) by [livejournal.com profile] rosa_acicularis, which I adore beyond all reason.

Whee, a friending meme! Another reason to love [livejournal.com profile] crack_van! :)

Name: Lysimache (lie-SIH-muh-key), jen
Age: 29
Active fandoms: The Professionals, Ollian, BSG, House, Sarah Jane Adventures, HP (Snape), telenovelas (although one hasn't grabbed me since La Traición finished). Gayboy fantasy/romance novels. Oh, and the Disney Princesses. :) Eclectic enough? *g*
Past fandoms: XF (MSR, then M/K); HL (D/M); TS; dS (F/K, not F/V); Xena; Buffy; Firefly; Star Wars, the original and then TPM (Q/O), which leads to Ewan!fandom and Jonathan Rhys Meyers!fandom; S&H; SV; a bit of SGA. My answers to the OTP nostalgia meme (http://lysimache.livejournal.com/467313.html#cutid1) will probably give you a good idea of where I've been fannishly!
Fandom interests: Slash (m/m and f/f). Epic!fics. AUs. Old school!fandoms. Vidding. Good crossovers. Good discussions of canon or fanfic. A good curtain!fic. :)
Fandom dislikes: Het. Gen, for the most part. Violence, including a lot of h/c. Extreme angst. Death!fic (will not read). Incest. RPF. Spoilers and people who can't lj-cut.
My LJ mostly contains: Some fannish squee, fic/vid recs and the like -- I read pretty widely; some posts about RL things (I'm an introverted lesbian feminist vegetarian Latin teacher who lives in Hippieville, MA; formerly from NJ), mostly flocked. Occasional movie and book reviews (sf, 'literature', glbt stuff). I read quite a few languages (many of them dead), which I have been known to post about. I haven't written fic or anything in ages, but you never know; it might happen again! *g*
Link to your favorite of your own fanfic, fanart, or fandom projects (or pimp someone else's!): I'm still rather proud of the Highlander vid (http://community.livejournal.com/vidding/387025.html) my girlfriend [livejournal.com profile] sineala and I made (Duncan/Methos, Methos/Byron) to Iggy Pop's "Gimme Danger" (as sung by Ewan in Velvet Goldmine, one of my all time favorite movies!).

My overall favorite 'desert island, pick just one'-type story would have to be torch's Ghosts and Lovers (http://www.strangeplaces.net/torch/xfstories.html#nwp) Mulder/Krycek fic.

I'd love to have some new friends, since I've been on LJ for almost eight years now, and the number of active posters on my fl keeps dwindling! I do try to comment occasionally, and I promise I'm nice. :)

This community is a wonderful resource and I keep returning to it, especially as I discover new fandoms through crossovers. Thank you for starting the engine.

Name: Michelle
Age: 40s
Active fandoms: CWRPS (J2), NCIS, Stargates (SG1 & Atlantis),
Past fandoms: Magnificent Seven, CSI: Las Vegas, Stephanie Plum, Pride & Prejudice
Fandom interests: slash, shmoop, case!fic, first time, good characterization and character exploration
Fandom dislikes: dark!fic, high school AUs, unrelenting belly-button-gazing angst
My LJ mostly contains: notes to myself on my favorite fics, so I don't lose them
Link to your favorite of your own fanfic, fanart, or fandom projects (or pimp someone else's!): I don't write (and I assure you you don't want me to) but links to 2 favorites--

first, what had been my all-time favorite until about 2 weeks ago: Sensing Evil (http://www.visionsofprettyboys.com/NCIS/SensingEvil.htm) by Lady Ra, NCIS, Gibbs/DiNozzo, NC-17 for sex, and violence, threats of non-con, and general creepiness. And I loved it even though I don't like dark!fic because there is so much light and love in it, too.

second, the AU series that has eaten my heart and brain, can't stop thinking about it, and I thank bluflamingo for reccing it here so I could find it: Take These Broken Wings (http://www.kekkai.org/synecdochic/sg1/bw.html) by synecdochic, Stargate SG-1, Cameron Mitchell/Jonathan Nielson (cloned!Jack), NC-17. It's an AU because Cameron didn't fully recover from his injuries and didn't join SG-1, but there is still a Stargate program and all the usual suspects show up to a greater or lesser degree. Choices--what they are, what they used to be, what's been taken away, the consequences, conscious and unconscious--and being honest with oneself.

Fandom interests: SLASH; and a variety of kink
Fandom dislikes: Mary-Sues, cross-overs that involve Character A from Fandom X really being something from Fandom Y (Sam Winchester being a Wizard, Buffy being a Time Lady, etc.). I just like cross-overs where characters meet and are the same.
My LJ mostly contains: memes and rambling.
Link to your favorite of your own fanfic, fanart, or fandom projects (or pimp someone else's!): I don't really write anything, or if I do, I don't write for any specific fandom, I write occassional crack fics to make my friends laugh (e.g. NC-17 Footloose slashfic (http://users.livejournal.com/_outercourse/163678.html) or NC-17 Pygmalion slashfic (http://users.livejournal.com/_outercourse/184041.html).) Similar ages, similar fandoms, totally agree about crossovers where one character turns out to not actually be that character eg Claude has a fob watch kind of fic. Also, can't have too many memes, and you have gorgegous kittehs. Friends?

Wow, you developed CV the same week you read the fic? That rates right up there with Athena coming out fully formed from Zeus' head! LOL. Truly, this is such a thoughtfully laid-out LJ!

Well, I'm glad you had the brainstorm. I only heard of CV this year and flat-out fell in love with it. Not only because it gave me the best and the brightest of my own fandom, but has lured me occasionally to others with some spectacular stories. And everyone is so friendly and enthusiastic! You did real good!

Thanks for the community and to you and Stopawhile for your awesome mod-ship work. It's obvious this is a labor of love for you two. Congratulations on your anniversary. Wishing you many, many more.

Name: Joolz
Age: forty-something
Active fandoms: Torchwood, Doctor Who, Atlantis
Past fandoms: Have written fic for: Stargate SG-1, Sentinel, Smallville, Man from UNCLE, Blake's 7, Numb3rs, Harry Potter.
Also am/have been into fanfic for: Die Hard 4, The Persuaders, Highlander, QAF-UK, NCIS.
Am a fan without being into 'fandom': LOTR, Dark Angel, Charlie Jade, The Middleman, BSG, Trek, Red Dwarf, Burn Notice.
Fandom interests: Fanfic: I like 'em long and plotty. Angst; h/c; humor; crack; risk-taking writing; m/m slash; gen; very little het, except where Jack Harkness is concerned, and then it's all good!
Fandom dislikes: wank/drama, suppression of minority opinion, WIP's. Would have said Mpreg, but somehow Jack Harkness makes that alright too. ;)

Fandom dislikes: Good ideas written poorly, established canon characteristics thrown out in favour of having one character weepy and the other strong + muscle-y.

Past fandoms: Whoa, old ones: Star Trek, Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea, Laredo, Rat Patrol, Wild Wild West, Man from UNCLE
Fandom interests: Mostly Star Wars. Upon getting my first computer three years ago, I was astounded by the range of the GFFA, with never-before-seen characters like Revan. I also read the Legacy and Knights Of The Old Republic comics, and the late lamented Dark Times.
Fandom dislikes: A teensy one: the Star Wars Original Trilogy. No other reason than I'd seen the movies and loved the characters for so many, many years since 1977 and I just got tired of them. Occasionally, I stray back, but mainly, I like the prequels and other eras. I dislike the drama that I've occasionally seen among fans on LJ; this is where I come to play, gentlebeings.
My LJ mostly contains: Tame real life stories and the much more interesting fanfic efforts.

I'm addicted to Crack and it's all your fault! You've turned me on to so many great fics and fandoms here that I NEVER would have found on my own...

Many, many thanks!

I really love this comm, so thanks for setting it up! Happy Birthday crack_van!

Name: Isi
Age: 17 [nearly 18 :D]
Active fandoms: Heroes, Torchwood, Harry Potter, Smallville, Life On Mars [UK, of course] Firefly
Past fandoms: Artemis Fowl, ST: TNG
Fandom interests: Longish fics, usually slash. I quite like NC17 stuff, but not on its own-- I want it to be built up to and explained, particularly emotionally. This is probably also because my favourite pairings tend to be confrontational or enemies in canon. I love watching fanvids but can't make them at all myself.
Fandom dislikes: Dead fandom; P/Q, I still love you! Extremist and militant shippers, and the unnecessary and pointless hate they generate. Also, I hate it when fandom losses respect for canon-- I don't mind people prefer fandom, but for example, I hated when I read about HP/HG shippers suggesting that JKR hadn't just done something they didn't like or agree with, but that she had made a mistake. In her own work. Fandom borrows, and might want to suggest corrections, but it shouldn't pretend it owns.
My LJ mostly contains: Mostly RL stuff at the moment, grumbling about school mainly, interspaced with incoherent squee.
Link to your favorite of your own fanfic, fanart, or fandom projects (or pimp someone else's!): I'm writing original at the moment so fic is sparse, but this http://altogetherisi.livejournal.com/12261.html is a little piece of HP/LV I wrote AGES ago.

Name: Rheanna
Age: Early 30's
Active fandoms: Currently, I'm writing SGA, and reading SGA, Sarah Conor Chronicles and Doctor Who.
Past fandoms: In chronological order: Next Generation, X Files, SG1, Angel, Battlestar Galactica.
Fandom interests: I'm polyamorous, really - gen, het, slash, it's all good. I particularly enjoy a good, long fic, with lots of plot and character interaction, regardless of whether or not there's a 'ship.
Fandom dislikes: I tend to avoid RPF and crack!fic, and porn for the sake of porn doesn't do a whole lot for me.
My LJ mostly contains: Fannish stuff: I keep my LJ public, for the most part, so there's not a lot of real life talk there, just fannish squeeing.
Link to your favorite of your own fanfic, fanart, or fandom projects (or pimp someone else's!): My fic is all here: http://www.goldenmaze.com/

Thank you for this comm! I've been wandering over here to check out the recs a couple of times a week for *years* now and I've come across a few real little gems of stories which I wouldn't have read otherwise. You guys do great work - it's appreciated.
