savoytruffle is another author whose work I would put on the mandatory reading list for fans in the Buffy-verse. In these two stories, savoytruffle shows us a Xander who is damaged and a Giles who is trying to handle it. That might sound depressing, but these stories are very hopeful, and they leave me confident that Xander and Giles can take care of one another, even when they don't know how to take care of themselves.


Giles opens his mouth again, but isn’t sure what to say.

“Have a seat.” Xander smiles suddenly and flags down a waiter, pushes his empty glass toward the edge of the table, then points in Giles’ direction. “Another for me and my friend here’ll have a scotch.” Xander looks at Giles. “There are no rocks,” he explains, before lowering his head over the guidebook until the drinks arrive.

Giles stares down at glass.

“There’s an empty room across the hall from mine,” Xander says, looking up. “Tomorrow I’m gonna ride a camel.”
