Why this must be read: In season two, a lot of Lyla's character development happened in scenes that hit the cutting room floor. Not a fan favorite from the start, the missing scenes left the audience scratching their heads and disliking her even more. In this character study Cartwheel_dizzy does an exceptional job of getting inside Lyla's head and taking us on the journey of Lyla finding religion. I can't promise you'll like her at the end of the fic if you didn't like her at the beginning, but I can promise her season two storyline will make a lot more sense.
Lyla has always defined herself by her surroundings. Lyla is Dillon, Texas. Lyla is her father, dependent on football. Lyla is her mother, dependent on her father. Lyla is Jason Street, the star of this town.
She’s misplaced all of it now – confidence in her father’s honesty, belief in her mother’s integrity, pride for this crumbling excuse for a town, and love for its chosen leader.
Turns out Lyla was the pom-poms, the yellow and blue, Jason’s hand in hers – and not much else. Turns out she was setting herself up to be a lyric in Bruce Springsteen’s “Glory Days” and she’d like something more than that, thank you very much.
This is Lyla’s first foray into existential crisis. This is the first time she asked herself, “who am I?” and had no sufficient answer.
Here’s the thing – she just wanted another mask to wear, a different kind of makeover, another uniform to slip on, another title at the end of her name. She couldn’t be just Lyla Garrity and nothing else, because she didn’t know what that meant.
The solution? Lyla Garrity, born again Christian.
