Why this must be read:
This is not a happy fic. Told from Lois POV, this is a world where Clark Kent disappeared for several years and came back as Superman. This must be made distinct because this Superman is almost like Kal-el. The reader is never really told whether or not this is a personal change like before; there are hints of Clark in the costume but it's as if his emotions are detached. Luthor is still very much a presence as Metropolis' golden boy but there's a darkness to his benevolence. As Lois tries to make sense of the stranger that her friend has become, she's hit on the other side by Luthor's ever growing restrictions against freedom of the press.
What's so awesome about this fic is Lois. Her internal struggles are reflected-- if not directly paralleled-- by the action. She believes in what Superman wants but doesn't believe in how he does it. She's pragmatic, not cynical. It's Orwell's 1984, it's Superman: Red Son and it's Season 7's Apocalypse blended in beautiful, low-key prose.
