Why this must be read: First person House is incredibly difficult to do well. This one does, and it remains pitch-perfect while taking on the emotionally lacerating subject of House’s relationship with his father. The setting of this story from June 2006 is House's father's funeral, and even that emotional event hasn't dulled his keen eye for observation:

Cuddy was there, too, all professional condolences and looking ever-so-natty in a charcoal jacket and a long black skirt... longer than I’ve ever seen her wear, actually. I didn’t think she even knew that they made skirts that came down below the knee. People came in and out; I think Stacy even made an appearance at one point but I was too busy trying to ignore her to notice.
If she’d brought Mark, though, then I would have noticed.
