Coping Strategies by Minervasolo (PG-13)
Fandom: DC Comics
Pairing: Roy Harper/Owen Mercer
Length: 6,300 for both parts
Author on LJ:
minervasolo
Author Website: Secret Geek
Why this must be read:
Because
minervasolo understands what it's like to be Roy (a man with checkered past who's turned his life around) and what it's like to be Owen (a man with a checkered past who's trying to turn his life around). She gets what life with "the Arrows" is like, but most importantly, she knows the highs and the lows of falling inconveniently in love and being afraid that you'll be perceived as nothing more than an infatuated loser with a stupid hero-worship crush.
Also, it's pretty damn funny throughout.
He wanted to comfort himself that Bart found it weird too, but that just made him angry. He wasn't good enough to be perfect Bart's brother. He didn't come from a line of moral martyrs. No, he came from the bad side, the Zoom side, on top of being a Rogue. Everyone expected Bart to be upset. Everyone ran to assure Bart they wouldn't think any less of him.
"The sibling rivalry is strong in this one," came a voice from the doorway. Owen looked up to see Arsenal standing there, smiling.
"Another, there is," Owen replied dryly.
Roy wandered through the bare room to sit next to Owen on the bed.
"I remember being weirded out by Connor's existence," Roy told him. "As far as I was concerned, I was Green Arrow's son."
"But you get along now, and everything's hunky-dory."
Roy laughed. "Dick tells me you've been sulking all week. Is it really that bad?"
"The kid's an angel," Owen muttered, deciding he didn't care if he did sound sulky. "Everyone's congratulating him on not being ashamed of me."
"Conner was a monk."
"Your father didn't kill Connor's best friend's father," Owen said bluntly. "Robin's promised not to judge Bart for being related to me."
"How do you know that?" Roy asked, apparently caught out.
"Dick told me."
"Idiot," Roy snorted. "Don't let him try to help, okay? This isn't where his talents lie. That's why he called me."
It didn't do anything for Owen's mood to know that Roy hadn't come of his own accord. 'Charity case' was the last label he wanted added to the pile on his shoulders right now. Owen prepared to tell him to fuck off.
"We're going to go and get drunk," Roy said. "Come on."
