Why should he care about a flyer's life? Had they not inflicted enough harm to those who walked the ground during the great wars? Had they not forbidden them to fly, after the final defeat, leaving them only the ground they walked on and the sea for the few who dared defy it? Had they not forced a shameful peace treaty on Frncys' kind and left them to die from hunger with regal indifference? It had been two centuries but the rancour was still vivid in the mind of the vanquished. He remembered the tears in his grand-father's eyes when he told Frncys the tales of the wars he had himself learnt from his grand-father.
But then the creature moaned softly in pain; the glow of the setting sun caught in his wings, the long pens shining like a rainbow, making the soft down covering his body glow like gold. Its beauty was such that Frncys' heart jumped in his chest and when the dark eyes opened and fixed him, filled with fear and confusion, he took a step forward, walking straight into the bush, the thick scales covering his body making him insensitive to the sharp thorns, and lifted the light body, hauling it over his shoulder.
