Five Times Matt Saracen kissed Julie Taylor (and One Time He wished He had), random00b, PG-13

Why this must be read: Because the five things challenge is one of the best pan-fandom challenges in existence. Because Matt and Julie will never not be cute, snarky, funny, and sweet. Because the voices are sharp and we see them at various ages and stages.
Grandma dies on a Monday, smack dab in between Matt’s twice weekly visits (Saturdays and Wednesdays) to her nursing home in Plano. His dad convinced him to move her to a nursing home when she couldn’t feed or bathe herself or go to the bathroom alone any longer. Towards the end, she doesn’t even recognize him. He hadn’t minded though; it was cathartic to just sit and talk to her, even if she couldn’t give him advice on how to handle the news that Julie’s dating some guy named Brody.
Three days later, Lorraine Saracen is buried in Dillon, next to her husband, in the plot they’d purchased in 1975. Coach & Mrs. Coach, the Clarkes, and most of Dillon Methodist Church attend the memorial service. Landry’s spending the semester in Costa Rica and can’t get a flight back in time. Henry Saracen drives down from Fort Sill, Oklahoma and attempts to play consoling father. Matt has never felt more alone.
He’s still standing at the burial site when Julie finds him. He’s hit with the faint vanilla scent of her perfume before he even sees her.
“Hey,” she says, stepping up besides him. “Your dad said I might find you here. How are you doing?”
“Hey, Julie. I’m okay, I guess,” he replies, re-focusing his eyes on the fresh mound of dirt covering his grandmother’s coffin. “It feels weird.”
“I’m sorry I missed the service. Mom just told me about your Grandma yesterday and I had car trouble on Interstate 10. Why didn’t you tell me yourself?”
“You, ah, didn’t have to come, you know, since we’re not together.”
“That’s why you didn’t tell me? Because of Brody?”
He doesn’t respond.
