Why this must be read: One of the most fascinating things about the Firefly 'verse is its rich texture. So often while watching canon I found myself wondering about events and characters off in the shadowy sidelines. Fortunately, Lorraine's particular genius as a writer is a wonderful ability to bring glorious illumination to just such sidelines, so it's no surprise that this story is a beautifully detailed, elegantly economical exploration of Regan Tam. This tale adds depth and pitiable humanity to a character whom one cannot really find likeable in canon, and makes an already vibrant 'verse seem just that much more vivid and compelling.
