Why this must be read:

The premise is that Connor has a rather unfortunate and close encounter with something from the prehistoric past, and is lucky enough that Stephen and Nick are there to sluice him off in the aftermath. But what makes this story is that it has a great Connor voice, capturing the way that Connor's mind flits from one thing to another, even in the midst of a crisis. There are a few minor issues with punctuation, particularly punctuating dialogue, but since the dialogue crackles it didn't throw me out of the story.

"I didn't know it was going to explode." Stephen said honestly, because after all who the hell did know what long extinct creatures would do when chased by people wielding fire extinguishers.

"I would have..." There was a long pause.

"Tried something else?" Connor offered.

"Probably told you to duck." Stephen corrected, and now he was smiling. Connor shook his hands and Stephen took a step back, gave him a pointed look that suggested the flinging of bug juices would not be looked upon favourably.

"I thought we were supposed to be capturing it anyway, I'm almost certain Cutter said 'capture it' in that way he does when he wants people to do things."

Stephen shrugged, dropped the fire extinguisher with a clang.

"He did," Stephen said, and he was smiling.
