Why this must be read:

The first episode of season 4 was such a Hotch/Morgan episode in my opinion. I was expecting a slew of related stories and tags after the final scene with Morgan admitting that Hotch's opinion matters to him, and Morgan staying to drive Hotch back to D.C. Unfortunately the avalanche of stories didn't come, but luckily these two ficlets did. They fit into the end of the episode seamlessly and satisfied my longing for Hotch/Morgan stories fantastically.

I love how the stories push their relationship forward- it is so easy to see how the traumatic events could do that- and also how first it is one and then the other who catches a clue about the depth of their feelings for the other.

Hotch didn't speak, but he tightened his fingers on Derek's. Derek bowed his head and kept his gaze on the knot of strong hands, light and dark skin, blood still rimming Hotch's fingernails, knuckles abraded.

"I think all the blood in my body turned to ice water when I heard you yelling out there." He was almost whispering. It was physically painful to say things like this, especially because he and Hotch didn't talk about what they had between them. Talking about it would be acknowledging emotions, and neither of them were good at that. Hotch especially had been more closed off since Haley walked out, even if the separation had left him vulnerable enough to turn to Derek for comfort.

That's all this is, Derek assured himself, for probably the hundredth time. Mutual comfort. He was always careful not to ask himself why he was looking for comfort in the first place.
