Long Shot by Kass (R)

Fandom: Hot Fuzz

Length: 3300 words

Why this must be read:
I have to admit, the 'one partner finds out the other is in love with him and freaks' is a personal kink. Mostly because I think we've all experienced some element of this in our lives, regardless of the gender of those involved. And we've all reacted differently. Kass takes a long look at Nicholas Angel, digs into his head, and gives us her take on what would happen in this situation. His evolution from freaking out to awkward acceptance isn't dragged out or over-angsted (though it could have been), but instead feels seamless and natural as we undergo with Nicholas a life-altering transition in the course of one night.

Nick thinks of all of the ways that Danny is part of his life. Danny understands him. Danny looks up to him. Danny isn't jealous of Nick's attachment to his work, because his work is Danny's work, too—and yet Danny gives him a reason to leave the station at the end of the day.

The prospect of losing all of these makes him sad and angry. For a glorious, satisfying moment he is furious at Danny for ruining everything... until he remembers that Danny didn't want him to know. That in fact it's his own fault he knows this at all.

Nick is swamped by a wave of misery. Grimly, he breaks his own rule about imbibing alone and pours himself a stiff drink. He hardly tastes the whisky going down.

I'll always remember this story because it's the very first piece of Hot Fuzz fic I found when I ran my web-searches back in...what was it, September?...before I bit the bullet and started writing myself. Although I'm not convinced that Nicholas would freak out if he discovered Danny had feelings for him (I'm more of the opinion that he just never dared to let it dawn on him, because he's like that and requires a ton of bricks to be dropped on his head by way of a clue), I love the way this piece is written. Definitely a favorite!

HF does have a particularly diverse array of getting-there strategies with a surprisingly uniform end result. It's heartening.
