Progress by Prairiestar (PG-13)
Fandom: Hot Fuzz
Pairing: Nicholas/Danny
Length: 3900 words
Author on LJ:
prairiestar
Author Website: none
Why this must be read:
Prairiestar takes the basic 'Nicholas and Danny hook up after the events yadda yadda...' and turns it on its ear for me because Danny is...Danny is...simply fantastic in this. He reacts to what is happening like a man does, not a cartoon character, not a wannabe action hero, but a man. One who gets angry, makes inappropriate jokes, and loves his friend. I love stories that refuse to gloss over what the impact of Frank's actions might have on Danny and Nicholas, and this one - in my opinion - deals with the emotional fallout in a way that feels real. There is also an element of sweetness to this story that is entirely without fluff. It kind of punches me in the gut every time I read it. And then unicorns come out.
The Andys buy him a flowering cactus plant, which they present to him at the pub one night in front of Doris, Tony and PC Walker (who’s either asleep of thinking very hard about something with his eyes closed).
“It’s an advance thank you gift,” Cartwright offers gruffly, “for scoring us a bigger office in the new station.” He jostles the other Andy’s shoulder.
Wainwright clears his throat awkwardly and adds, “Yeah, you know, since you like plants so much.”
“Yeah.” They both grin suddenly. “And because you’re still a bit of a prick every once and while. Heeee-eey!!” They high five, clap him on the shoulders and then go off to their corner table to talk about whatever it is the two of them talk about. Probably each other’s moustaches, Nicholas thinks wryly as Doris hugs him and Tony hands him another beer. Walker snorts loudly and startles himself awake.
Nicholas puts the cactus on his kitchen table, which has become his makeshift desk since his old office consists of rubble and his new office is still only a blueprint. The cactus sits there while he works, quietly judging him and reminding him not to be too much of a prick if he can help it.
