Why this must be read:
The episode "Redemption" explains that the Liberator is one of The System's Deep Space Vehicles (although not what the hell it was doing floating around near the London). However, the series doesn't give much techno-neep-gubbins about the operations of the engines, energy banks, or life support and computer systems.
In one way but not another, this is a brief essay into hard science fiction. Blake asks Avon how the energy banks recharge. Avon, unfortunately for his bank account, has never been able to figure it out either...
And then, between one [chess] move and the next, for no real reason at all, Blake--who was (and this in itself was almost unheard of) simultaneously sober, unendangered, emotionally unruffled (if you didn't count a mild touch of boredom), unhurt, and not in need of comfort-opened his mouth and said what he had, for very good reasons, spend the last year-and-a-half not saying.
and then, with Blake's unwitting collaboration, Avon does figure it out (although, considering what a small crew it is, and the implied Gan/Vila, the solution may have serious implications for the crew's future missions.
