Even though it has what amounts to a canonical OTP and a canonical long, plotty get-together story for them, YnM is not a source that lends itself naturally to the romance genre, nor to story forms essentially related to it. This jewel of a story tells you everything you need to know about why.
The length of this story is deceptive: it packs disproportionate emotional force. Disproportionate, that is, in much the same the way that the explosive force of a nuclear weapon is disproportionate.
And if all that weren't enough, well, no writer would want to miss the opportunity to marvel over the sheer virtuosity of Northlight's work. This story is the verbal equivalent of a Bach fugue, as played on the harpsichord: all short plucked notes; theme and variations, all arrayed with a precision that feels at once inevitable and deceptively simple.
