The Third Replicant by Ravenbell (PG-13)

Pairing: Hisoka/Tsuzuki
Length: 15,000 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] ravenbell

Why this must be read:

In my last rec, I noted that YnM is not a good fandom for long plotty establishing-a-relationship stories, of the kind that are the staples of so many fandoms. There's a good reason for that: romance as a genre is all about the achievement of love as a transformative experience, and in YnM the main characters are by definition not open to that sort of transformation. If they were, they would not be shinigami; if they changed enough to become capable of it, they would not live more or less happily ever after, but go forward into the true death.

But. If the main gate is barred, as it were, an inventive writer can come in by a side door. And so what we do have in YnM is long plotty AUs. In this one, [livejournal.com profile] ravenbell fuses YnM with the Bladerunner universe, to stylish and deeply satisfying effect. You probably don't need to know either source to enjoy this story -- it's that good -- but of course, knowing one or (ideally) both only makes it better.
