Why this must be read:

I loved this story when I first read it about a year ago. It reminded me of old Highlander stories in its scope and themes, and also has one of my favorite plot devices -- prophetic dreams. Duncan has strange dreams that lead him to suspect Methos is in need of help; Duncan has to find Methos before it's too late. They spend much of the story separated by circumstance, but are still closely connected. Jam-wired is a writer who I greatly admire. Her stories are always interesting and she has a quality that sets her apart from other writers.

Going through the motions of a kata was always a meditation for him, moving smoothly from one position to the next, controlling the fluidity of his body. He was in the club he taught at – recognized and knew it rationally – but the scenery was different. It didn’t cause him upset though, the darker stone floor unlike the wooden one he was used to, the walls black instead of white, the ceiling open to the sky when it should have been vaulted. He moved from position to position slowly, with more control than he felt he’d ever had.

"You’ve been doing that a long time now," a familiar voice rang in his ears. "One would think you’d tire of it."

Duncan continued his routine, watching the man with the long, dark hair move in and out of his peripheral vision. Seven more steps and he finished the routine, the man standing before him patiently. Duncan bowed politely.

"I know you," Duncan said unconcerned as he walked to the bench his towel was on.

"Not really. We’ve met before."

The towel wasn’t there, but Duncan wasn’t sweating anyway. He had a class to teach soon; he was sure of it.

"Have you signed up for Tae Kwon-Do?"

The man rolled his eyes. "Okay. I’ll make it easy for you this time. Methos brought you into his dream, but since you’re dreaming too, your subconscious mind has some control over what happens here." The man looked around the building with a speculative expression. "Now…we just need to find him."

Duncan frowned, the sliver of a memory coming to him, something this stranger had told him before. "You don’t want me here."

The man smiled. "Well, not originally, but Methos just won’t leave it alone. Besides, I think you can help me. I’m Namtar, by the way. Oh, there he is now."

Namtar nodded to something behind Duncan, and when Duncan turned to look, the room was smaller, enclosed, and dark. The lighting was dim, and the red hue of the walls and cover on the bed made everything glow with a warm ambiance. Walking to the bed, Duncan saw Methos asleep there, covers up to his chin, just the hint of fingers peeking out the top of the cover.
