Sense of Justice by Darklady FRAO (NC-17)

Well, Janus looks forward too, so now I’m going to focus on new stories!

Fandom: THE SENTINEL
Pairing: Jim/Blair
Length: 21K
Author on LJ: unknown
Author Website:  her page at WWOMB

Why this must be read:  Ah, Moonridge!

Every summer there’s an online auction to raise money for the Moonridge Animal Shelter, supported by Garett Maggart and Richard Burgi.  Something about this cause really brings out the spectacular in stories and vids. Last year, Caro Dee put out a challenge for prison fic. Oh, not the normal kind where Blair or Jim are undercover or wrongly accused. No, Caro asked for one where they actually committed a crime. Darklady was obviously inspired.

An AU set in the canon universe, but one where everything went slightly differently -- down a darker path.  Jim didn’t go to Peru and so wasn’t declared a hero. His move from Vice to Major Crimes did not go smoothly. A bigoted, unsupportive boss; a shrewish wife; an unsupportive family; a kidnapping gone bad,   a lying witness.  All converge to send Jim to prison doing hard time.  Ridiculous you say? Just read for yourself.

This is very noir-ish, seen mostly through Jim’s eyes as he’s transferred to a new prison. He has to rebuild his tough guy rep, guard the fact that he’s an ex-cop and keep himself alive and sane in a hostile, complex environment. And where is Blair? Already doing time himself in the same prison, for conspiracy to commit a whole bunch of murders.

This is the only Sentinel story on her page, although she posted a total of 21 in various fandoms. This could be improved with some gentle beta-ing,  but all in all this is an engrossing tale of what might have been.

Oh, I'm so glad to see you've recced this story. What intrigued me so much was Blair's portrayal, because Jim always was a dangerous man so it's not as much of a stretch, but the way she wrote Blair was still recognizably Blair and yet...

Darklady wrote a fascinating story.

Damn. ::Ticks another story off my potential recs sheet:: But still, I guess that just means that other people get to see this story sooner. :-)
