Why this must be read:
"The Wish" is one of BtVS' most dark and powerful episodes, and "Shadowland" plunges the reader deep into that alternate universe, as Giles waits for his Slayer, and Sunnydale begins to fall apart. "Shadowland" is the set-up, the building decay of that world - it's chilling and heartbreaking, skillfully incorporating characters and and plot elements from S1 and 2 that "The Wish" didn't have the time (or access to the actors) to explore. This is one of those stories that might as well be canon.
