Why this must be read: Hambel is one of my favourite LoM writers and I really could have picked any of her stories to recommend. This story focuses on Sam and Gene and the unresolved sexual tension that simmers between them. Full of angst, tension, great characterisation, and lots and lots of heat, Hambel creates a story that pulls you in and that just flows seamlessly from the characters and dynamic we see on the show.

Something passed across Hunt’s face, a fleeting emotion, but it was gone so quickly that Sam couldn’t read it. This time, though, he saw the punch coming and blocked it, retaliating with a knee to the stomach and a punch to Hunt’s jaw.
A fire had started in Sam’s belly. It was an all-too-familiar scenario. This was Hunt’s way – to bully, to intimidate, to fight until he got what he wanted. Well, Detective Chief Inspector Samuel Tyler was going to lay down for no-one. He knew what it was to lead a team in CID and he got results his way, using the letter of the law, and he’d be damned if he went against all that he knew and believed to be true and just.
