Why this must be read:
The thing about the Runaways title that makes it so accessible and grounded (by Marvel standards) is that none of the kids are homecoming kings or cheerleader princesses. They're the awkward kids who hide in the libarary at lunchtime, who haven't figured out where they fit, and on top of that their parents turned out to be supervillains. No one embodies that more than Nico, Nico the goth girl, Nico who keeps kissing other people's boyfriends, Nico who somehow ended up in charge of keeping her best friends alive. This story captures that, so well, with this story about Nico and Karolina, Karolina who literally shines, Karolina the only person who ever liked her first. Nails the earnest teenage thing.
Nico kept telling herself to think about it rationally. She had to go; it was the right thing to do. It was the only thing to do. Stop being angry, you idiot, she repeated to herself. Stop feeling hurt because she left you, as if she would be able to believe it if only she repeated it enough. It's not even like she left you, she left everyone, and now she's out there saving people and making peace in the galaxy and getting married to this creepy alien guy she knows nothing about, and it's not because you rejected her and it's not because you didn't kiss her back.
