Why this mustbe read:
Because I've been writing these recs ever since the Cretaceous Era, I have permission to rec my own stories. So there.
I think of this as the Bloomsbury story--it was inspired by wondering, "What if Del and Anna Grant had another sibling, Duncan?" From there, it was a short step to Virginia Woolf!Cally, and Avon and Anna as Harold Nicholson and Vita Sackville-West.
This is an AU--the bank fraud succeeded so brilliantly that Avon and Anna are a little tired of vast wealth, and join Blake and the large crew of his spaceship in the quest for Central Control. Gan, Kasabi, and Hal and Lauren Mellanby are still alive; Dr. Renor still can't pull any birds; Vila and Jenna are married, but not to each other, Orac is jealous; there's a one-minute flashback version of Madchen in Uniform; a cracking Star One debate; and there's a happy ending but probably not the one you expect. Between the flashbacks and the story time, it spans several years, several one-off characters and some OCs. All that in 22 pages.
The circumstances behind Chief of Staff Gan's resignation:
I went into the B Deck Bathroom for a shower. The door on the bath cubicle wasn't properly closed," Gan said. [...]"So I could see that although there were two vacant bath cubicles, and I haven't issued a Water Conservation Alert, you were sitting in the bathtub in a normal way and...that...FELLOW...was right there in the bathtub with you, facing the other way."
"Yes," Blake said. "I was awfully flattered. I mean, you only have to know Avon for five minutes to know that generally it's the other person's back pressed up against the bath taps."
"He was sucking on your toes," Gan said.
"He'd have to be a contortionist to suck anything else from that angle," Blake said. "With gills."
