Fear of Flying by Lanning Cook (PG)

Hi I’m Callisto and I shall be putting pedal to the metal for The Sentinel this month. I’m relatively new in TS, but I’ve been reading Jim and Blair as if the world were ending since I washed up on the shores of Cascade about 18 months ago, so hopefully I'll manage okay.

Fandom: THE SENTINEL
Pairing: Jim/Blair
Length: 12k
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] lanning
Author Website: http://www.852prospect.org/archive/ (the link to her own website appears to be broken)
Why this must be read: Because I thought I’d start off with a short, feel-good favourite of mine. It’s a posh police dinner and, unfortunately for Jim, Blair is drunk, up a tree, slowly stripping, and quoting Whitman to all and sundry at the top of his lungs.

It doesn’t get much funnier or more adorable than this for one of the first fics I ever read in this fandom.

"I am communing with the intricate web of life that is the upper canopy." Another object struck the ground. "Behold! I am the mighty harpy eagle of Amazonia! RAWK! RAWK!"

"Christ in a cathouse," Jim sighed as his gaze was drawn, finally, upward.

Blair sat straddled on a tree limb, his back to the trunk, about twenty feet off the ground. His curls had pulled free of their restraining tie and floated wildly around his face as he flapped his arms in a vigorous, if inaccurate, imitation of a large bird of prey. Jim tripped over something in the leaves, and glancing down, realized that the mighty harpy eagle had disposed of its shoes.

OMG! FoF has never been recommended? This is so hilarious. What a great story to kick off the month. I look forward to your other recs. RAWK!

BTW, here's a working link for Lanning's stories:

Everything Lanning has written--in this or any other fandom--should be must reading.

Your description, however, gives away some info up front that Lanning revealed more deliberately in her story . . .

I don't think I've read this one, so I'll do that soon. Thanks for the rec. =>}

I'm looking forward to all your recs!

I did. What a fun read! *g*

I'm going to read more of hers today. I've read some of her stories before, but I somehow missed this one. Thanks for the rec.

Great start for your rec reign. This is one of my absolute favorites and contains my all time favorite Blair line ever, to wit: "'We're being harpy eagles,' Blair added helpfully."

That simple little line, in context, just makes me so very happy.

We're being harpy eagles is, as you said, one of the single greatest lines in this fandom. Don't know how I missed it, but many thanks for putting it out there to read. Literate, sweet, innocent, hot. Too many things to love.

A first-rate recommendation. Lanning is a fabulous writer and this is a great example of her work. Thanks!

This story should come with a warning - do not eat or drink while reading as food or drink may go down the wrong way. I almost choked while eating popcorn and reading this. I don't think I've laughed so hard in a long time!
