"What Do You Go Home To?" by smercy (PG)
Hi! I'm Veronica (aka
13cellardoors) and I'll be driving the Heroes van for the month of March! I've been excited about this for months now, planning and assembling lists and generally obsessing. Hopefully my recs will do Heroes fic justice. I have a special interest in gen, character studies, angst/drama, Claire, Elle, Peter, Nathan, Adam, and crack (fic, not drug). I also have a serious weakness for Peter/Claire (Claire/Everyone, really), so that might show up at some point ...
Fandom: HEROES
Characters: Lyle and various Bennets
Length: ~6900 words

Why this must be read: Lyle gets very little screentime and possibly even less fic time. So I love when a writer can take a minor character and really flesh them out, make them real and tangible to the reader. "What Do You Go Home To?" is set during season two as Lyle deals with his mother's memory problems and his sister's weirdness and generally just being ignored. It's very realistic and so very heartbreaking as Lyle makes sacrifices in order to hold his family together.
Lyle tries really hard not to think about the weeks he spent with Mom in the shelter, waiting for Dad and Claire to show up and rescue them. (Or for some Company goon to show up and finish them off. Or hold them hostage. Or leave them braindead husks of nothing.)
Nobody ever talks about the lost weeks, which is okay. It makes it a lot easier to pretend to be normal once they find the house in California. And apparently, Lyle's really good at pretending to be extra-normal. Like normal squared, or normal cubed, or so indistinguishable that nobody ever bothers to acknowledge his existence.

I'll be looking forward to your recs -- Peter/Claire is my favourite Heroes pairing but I'm to afraid to work my way through the fic out there. I need some guidance.
