Progress by Corona ( PG-13)
Fandom: Psych
Pairing: Shawn/Lassiter
Length: Short
Author on LJ entangled_now@lj
Why this must be read:
Without ever witnessing it (aw shucks), I'm still pretty sure that, should Shawn and Lassiter ever hook up, there would definitely be a morning-after freakout. It could be an old-fashioned hetero freak out or just the horrified realization that Shawn just slept with Lassiter, that Lassiter has just slept with Shawn. Considering how Shawn tends to overreact, the comic possibilities are pretty endless. Of course, considering that they are both men, and rather messed up men, the possibilities for repressed and denied feelings are also undeniable.
Progress is a short story that balances both ideas nicely. It's told from Shawn's point of view (a point of view that I adore) and on the surface is just Shawn watching a pissed-off Lassiter get dressed and leave. That there might be more to it than that is only hinted at, and then barely revealed right before the ending.
This story, though simple, makes me think a lot about point of view. We're only given Shawn's pov here, and only have the few details of the night before that he can remember, but his sense of shock and pleasure, and then hurt, comes through very clearly. And Corona still manages to keep it funny. That's a lot harder than it sounds (though it sounds pretty hard to me). Not only that, but there is an entirely unique Shawn voice here. He's still wacky, childish, and experienced (and therefore all-knowing), yet he's also strangely lost at the same time. He really doesn't know what to do upon seeing Lassiter run like hell.
As a bonus, aside from just an awesomely cute, short fic to read, there's also the language in this story. An example: Which is a shame, because there are a lot of words Shawn would quite like to say. He's just not sure at this moment that he could string them together in the right order. Words in the wrong order could be a catastrophe, flinging word shrapnel everywhere
Shawn's brain running on overdrive is also entertaining, and word shrapnel is still an image that stays with me.
Anyway, onto the ficcage.
