The Woods series by Anna S ( NC-17)

Why this must be read: Because by turns it’s dark, sweet, and so, so moving. It’s three in one and in the first part, Down to the Woods, we’re in Man Land, a fishing trip with the entire gang post-series (Blair is no longer a cop). The banter is perfect, as is the sense of something building between Jim and Blair. But towards the end it gets dark, no bones about it. The cabin is invaded and Blair is brutally attacked. It’s not torture porn by any means, but if you know you can’t read such things, then skip to part two, The Tree Becoming, where time jumps forward and we’re in the aftermath. Jim and Blair are both dealing, and trying to find their way back to what was emerging between them before the attack. The whole series is not nearly as dark as it sounds, and I personally find the third part, The Wood Beyond, a great comfort read. Why? Because this is the Jim I always wanted for Blair; quiet, solid, full of care and love, and not a gram of mush or sentiment to take him out of character. And Anna’s writing is so intense and beautiful it steals your breath at times.

He drew his head back and gazed up at Jim. Sometimes he didn't know what to say in the face of Jim's kindness, or to his literal face in which handsomeness disguised such beauty that Blair would have thrown himself on a knife in sacrifice to it. Sometimes there were moments when he looked at Jim and recognized that he'd wanted this man for as long as memory stretched, wanted these elements, as starkly as a child wants snowfall or a father. He'd just been waiting, like a boy standing at a fence in twilight surrounded by snow and emptiness and silence, looking at a road down which no one ever came. - The Wood Beyond-

EDIT: Be sure to read Anna's introduction to her trilogy at her website.

This may well be my most-admired fic ever, in any fandom- dense and full of life and hreartbreaking and life-enhancing. It deserves to be read as a story without regard to fannish knowledge.

Note though: [livejournal.com profile] eliade is usually known as Anna S. and more people might well follow your recommendation and learn the wonders of this story if you edit her name and add her lj name.

Julia, she is well known in BtVS and Alias and SGA fandoms

I've got to go read this -- I love her work but for some reason haven't read these yet! Yea -- "new" stuff by a fave writer!

I can't believe it's never been recc'd. Read it and weep. One of the first and finest TS stories I've ever read, thank you.
eta- I'm an extreme wuss when it comes to violence but I find that you need to read the whole story through at least once just to get all the nuances, then skip the painful part on subsequent re-reads.

Wow, what an amazing story. The only flaw I could see is that it felt very much like a fic unfinished, which even Anna warns about. I just didn't think we got enough closure, unfortunately. But I was still blown away, so thanks for the rec.

Sadly, Anna's site is now inactive. Although most of her stuff can be found at 852 prospect, the Woods series cannot. I've made Way Back Machine links for the three stories, plus her introduction:
