due South / Stargate Atlantis (G)

Pairing: none
Length: long - 104KB
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] julia_here
Author Website: Her memories.
Why this must be read: [livejournal.com profile] julia_here is an extremely talented writer, no doubt about it. And Birds Of A Feather proves it. Take two boys, both intelligent, both considered “odd” or “freakish” by their families and peers, both outcasts and watch them form the bonds of friendship, in spite of a ten year age difference.

[livejournal.com profile] julia_here's writing is meticulous and detailed and covers the span of their friendship, from their meeting in Fort McMurry to renewed friendship in Chicago, and later in Atlantis. I was impressed with [livejournal.com profile] julia_here's Fraser-voice, real and believable and him.

In the end, they went into the small cafe at the bus station and had the most exotic meal of Ben's life: half a grapefruit to start, tea with fresh milk, fried eggs, back bacon and a patty of sausage, fried potatoes, toast with butter and jam, and orange juice. Grandmother tutted when there was no porridge or bannock on the menu and was shocked when the waitress suggested cold cereal as a replacement. She finally was mollified with an order of flapjacks, which she ate without butter or syrup, but Grandfather ordered the whole breakfast special, and encouraged Ben to do the same, saying that travel was meant to broaden and that meant trying new food as well. Grandfather got up for a moment after they'd ordered and when he came back was carrying a newspaper, a real one, the Calgary Herald with the same days date; he carefully divided the sections, and the three of them ate and the newspaper sections were finished and passed from hand to hand as if they were in one of their usual cabins some Sunday morning in the north. Benton felt excitement fizzing through his brains, and thought how very well they fit in in this sophisticated setting.
