Doctor Who Season 4 by Aria (PG-13)
Hi, I'm
kate_swynford , and I'll be driving the Doctor Who van for what's left of March. I only recently ventured on Old Who territory, so my recs will be mostly New Who and the Third Doctor. I should also warn you that I have a soft spot for the Master. I'll try to be balanced in my recs, but, not surprisingly my first rec is a Doctor and Master story.
Fandom: DOCTOR WHO
Pairing: Doctor/Master
Length: novel-length

Why this must be read: It's a brilliant adventure that has all the perfect Doctor Who ingredients: a mystery, lots of running, humour, angst, weird (and original) aliens, visits to the past and to the future and an all star cast, including the Jones family, Jack and, of course, the Doctor and the Master. The premise is very simple: Lucy never shot the Master, and the Doctor got to keep him as he had intended. The AU season even has the structure of a real season: thirteen chapters/episodes, most of them stand-alone adventures, all of them leading to the complicated finale. But although all the loose ends tie together neatly at the end, it's more about the characters than the plot. And it's one of the best stories about the Doctor and the Master - with their shared history, friendship and hatred, past grudges and regrets, bitterness , pride, hope and the ghost of their lost planet looming over both of them.
"Did you think keeping me was going to be easy, Doctor?" he asks softly. "Safe? Nice? Did you think having me with you would mend your poor, lonely, damaged hearts? It won't. Keeping me will be misery. It will be difficult, and trying, and it will always, Doctor, be difficult and trying."

Me too--all of them. The Master is just so deliciously wicked that you have to love him!
Many years ago, I had the privilege of meeting Anthony Ainley, who took over the role near the end of #4's time and continued through #7, at a Who-con. He was truly a wonderful man (who wore the best cologne), very gracious and friendly to his fans. When we happened to be sharing an elevator, he told me I looked lovely (referring to my long dress and cape, not me, I'm sure). At one of his autograph sessions, he handed out jelly babies; I still have the one he gave me.
I loved the new Master almost as much. How couldn't you love a villain that sings the Scissor Sisters? I was really ticked off that they wasted the character by killing him(? is he really dead?). I am very much looking forward to reading these stories! Thanks.

I hesitated about this rec because I thought surely everyone has read this story already - but then I thought maybe not. And anyway, crack_van is always such a good place to start in a particular fandom so I thought it should be here.
P.S. And I'm sure the Master will be back. :)
