This was the runner-up for crossover day. In honor of the new DW happenings today and a farewell nod to the current Doctor, I thought this appropriate. Happy Christmas to those who celebrate it and an extraordinarily good day to all.Fandom: Fairy Tales: Cinderella Characters: The Eleventh Doctor, Amy Pond, Rory Williams, Cinderella Length: 603 words Author Website: at AO3Why this must be read: Just a little silliness as The Doctor, Amy and Rory interfere for the good. Since so many of my recs are on the heavy side, this is a little cream puff. Enjoy. The much adapted tale of Cinderella and her fairy goddoctor If you like this, take a moment to tell the author. Feedback is precious and appreciated!

Title: Ten Impossible Companions Before Breakfast by distaff exile Pairing/Characters: Sleeping Beauty/Ten, Sleeping Beauty/Prince Phillip Fairy Tales/Literary characters: Snow White, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Alice (in Wonderland), Tinkerbell (Peter Pan), Ariel (Little Mermaid), Belle (Beauty and the Beast), Mulan, Rapunzel (Tangled), Merida (Brave), Prince Phillip (Sleeping Beauty). DW characters: One, Four, Seven, Nine, Ten, Eleven, 8 1/2 (The War Doctor), Ace McShane, Romana II, Susan Foreman, Rose Tyler, Clara Oswin Oswald Length: 809 words Author Website: at AO3Why this must be read: It's a series of vignettes showing the intersection between the lives of The Doctor with those of ten Disney heroines. Appropriately, the story bounces around in The Doctor's timeline rather than linearly. Written just a few weeks ago, it also includes The War Doctor (played by John Hurt), called Eight and a Half. Ranging from light to dark; there is a non-con warning for one. Since this was inspired by artwork, you get a twofer today! Ten Impossible Companions Before Breakfast If you like this, take a moment to tell the author. You will absolutely make her day!

Title: Barrayarans and Time Travelers by Dira Sudis Fandom: VORKOSIGAN SAGA & DOCTOR WHO/TORCHWOOD Pairing: Aral Vorkosigan/Jack Harkness, canon pairings Length: 29,914 words Author on LJ: dsudisAuthor Website: on AO3Why this must be read:There are two stories in this series. The first takes place pre- Shards of Honor in the Vorkosigan universe, so no Cordelia and a different sort of Aral Vorkosigan, and post-"Children of Earth" in the Torchwood canon. It is utterly delightful! A one-night-stand with a mysterious stranger who keeps his heart in a little blue box and thus cannot die. Perfect! The second story is no less perfect. The Doctor and Amy Pond come to Barrayar, and Aral Vorkosigan knows who they must be. This is set between Barrayar and The Warrior's Apprentice with a young Miles in the mix along with a perfect Cordelia, and around "Vincent and the Doctor" in the Doctor Who canon (meaning Amy has forgotten that Rory ever existed). All the characterizations are fabulous, even Piotr Barrayarans and Time Travelers by Dira Sudis

Title: America Is Weird Pairing: Gen Length: three gifs Author on LJ: unknown Author Website: on Tumblr, YouTube, and TwitterWarnings: Fast flashing gif, possible seizure trigger Why this must be read seen:Here is the creator’s summary, and the paragraph that accompanies the gifs in the original Tumblr post: “An AU where the Doctor thinks he is visiting a quaint town in the southwest of the U.S., but Night Vale seems more alien than he is.” Ladies and gentlemen, on my way to the station this morning, I found a strange man on a swing suspiciously close to the dog park that we are not supposed to know about. This man was wearing a blazer and a bowtie, which he informed me was “cool”. He is in the studio right now, trying to force a fez onto my head. He looks human, but it is painstakingly obvious he has, in fact, two hearts. More on this later. But for now, let’s go to— the weather. “America Is Weird” on Tumblr

Title: sweet dreams & flying machines by coffeesuperheroPairing: Gen Length: 2,841 Author on LJ: coffeesuperheroAuthor Website: AO3Why this must be read: This is a story about how, at the age of six, Martin stopped wanting to be an aeroplane and started wanting to be a pilot. In Cabin Pressure, you get the sense that Martin never really had the happiest life, and the peek you see here of his childhood is quite sad and lonely. Luckily, an unexpected visit from the Doctor turns things around. This is a story to read on grey days; by the end, you just feel cheered up and cozy. And, as a bonus, it has a piece of really lovely fanart by artbylexie. sweet dreams & flying machines

Fandom: Sailor Moon/Doctor Who (Classic and New) Pairing: Gen Length: ~ 1.300 words Author on LJ: sailorptah Author Website: Ao3Why this must be read:I'm part of both fandoms and naturally I couldn't resist this fic. The idea that Pluto meets The Doctor is simple but also amazing. She's the guardian of the Door of Space-Time and the Doctor travels through Time. So it's only natural that they meet somehow. This story is short but every new paragraph shows the difference between the various incarnations of The Doctor. Especially if you know The Doctor 1 till 10, it's a fun way to see if you catch clues from canon moments in Doctor Who. Also, similar to Doctor Who you need to read/see everything before some things stand a reason, but in the end you can only think how good everything fits together. Ten Times The Doctor Met Sailor Pluto (Plus One More) (Ao3)--> Sailor Pluto meets Doctors One through Ten. (Not necessarily in that order.)

Hello, I'll be driving the van this month. I'm sorry, I've been somewhat distracted by Darth Real Life, but better late than never, right? Title: Smile Chapter 27: Crossover 1: A Beginning Characters: Ahsoka Tano, Captain Rex, Tenth Doctor Length: 4-5k (?) Author on LJ: unknown Author Website: Queen on FFNWhy this must be read:I've been having a Doctor Who marathon, that's why. No, kidding. It's because Queen is wonderful and an amazing writer and has decided to use this one-shot as inspiration for an entire soon-to-be-posted AU. In this fic, Ahsoka and Rex meet the Doctor for the first time, and as anyone familiar with the lovely Doctor can imagine, our friends from the GFFA don't quite know what to make of him. Queen is primarily a Star Wars writer, but her characterization of the Doctor is spot-on and Ahsoka's perception of both the Doctor and his TARDIS through the lens of the Force is imaginative and dazzling. Note: This crossover is one in a collection of ficlets (all Star Wars) by the same author. Feel free to enjoy the others. Smile Ch. 27

Fandom: BANDOM/DOCTOR WHO (Panic! At the Disco) Pairing: Spencer Smith Length: About 121,000 words Author on LJ: akire_ytaAuthor Website: verbosemofoWhy this must be read: Can 'asdfghjkl;' be an acceptable response as to why this fic must be read? I love this fic, I've read it so many times. Starting from Season 3, Spencer Smith takes the place of Martha and goes on an adventure with The Doctor instead. The entire Season 3 is re-done, 13 stories along with 5 intermissions and an epilogue. What I thought was interesting about this series was the writer actually gave us an insight into the aftermath of The Doctor's actions and how it affects 'the companion'. Be ready for some angst my fellow readers! :D ( Excerpt under the cut )Keeping Time Index

Vidder: ViveAmnerisMusical Artist: "A Thousand Years" by Christina PerriLength: 4:44Vidder on LJ: UnknownVidder Website: UnknownWhy this vid must be viewed: This is the video that made me open to liking fanvids in general, and a beautiful, beautiful, beautiful portrayal of this pairing (a major OTP of mine). Once you've seen it, you won't be able to associate this song with anything but this timey-wimey couple, and even though the song was technically written for the "Twilight" saga (I know, I know), it seems like it could only have been written about them. - Mood: relaxed

Fandom: Doctor Who Pairing: Rose Tyler/The (Tenth) Doctor Length: 5769 words Author on LJ: soaring_smiles Author Website: FFNWhy this must be read: I had been wondering for a while why Rose got off seemingly consequence-free after absorbing the heart of the TARDIS, while the Doctor regenerated and Jack sort of stopped and even Blon Fel-Fotch Passameer-Day Slitheen reverted back to an egg form when exposed to it. This fic takes a clear idea--that there were consequences--and runs with it in a fascinating, enigmatic direction that takes into account classic- and Moffat-era Who as well as Rose's tenure. The writing has an eerie poetic quality, and anyone who loved "The Doctor's Wife" will certainly be entranced. Fandom: Doctor Who/Iron Man Pairing: Gen Length: ~1500 words Author on LJ: remindmeoftheAuthor Website: LJ fic tagWhy this must be read: Tony Stark is such a powerful and overconfident individual that it's not news to say he's at his most interesting when he's powerless. This one-shot, which follows him through the Year That Wasn't, considers what Tony (and not so much Iron Man) could do in the face of an enemy he can't defeat. Martha Jones is at her best here, and regardless of how things did or didn't go down on the Valiant, I'm pretty sure this is just what happened in between. ( Funny how being right isn't really cheering him up. )Supply and Demand

Pairing: John Watson/Sherlock Holmes Length: 66306 words Author on LJ:not on lj that I can find Author Website: qlstrange on AO3 Why this must be read: Because this is one of the best Doctor Who crossovers with any version of Sherlock Holmes canon I have ever read. It takes the crossover premise and goes so far beyond it. It is like a season of Doctor Who with Holmes and Watson as companinons and it is incredible. Of course the Doctor and Holmes would hit it off, and of course Holmes would take his beloved Watson with him to the ends of the universe. The various interactions between Holmes, Watson, and the Doctor are rich, engaging, and beautiful. This is an epic adventure full of plot twists, humor, and romance.

Fandom: Doctor Who Pairing: River Song/The Doctor, Amy Pond/Rory Williams Length: 5K words Author on LJ: easytheretyger Author Website: Master listWhy this must be read: Headcanon accepted. This fic--which sees River packing up her parents' house post-TATM and wondering where their farewell note to her is (if it even exists)--sort of broke my heart and pieced it back together again. I love stories that flesh out and balance her marriage to the Doctor and that give him the chance to support her in turn. And the illustrations of River's variable childhood leave so much to the imagination while feeling complete. ( She found Rory’s first. Then Amy's. )Post - Mood: sleepy

Fandom: Doctor Who Pairing: Gen Length: 4324 words Author on LJ: myscheherazadeAuthor Website: AO3Why this must be read: This is the best kind of crack, even for a fandom where crack premises like "the Doctor regenerates into a cat" are actually kind of canonically plausible. Anyway, read it--it's funny and a little heartbreaking and sweet and features lots of old friends who take this rather pear-shaped turn of events in stride. Also, K-9 can be a bad dog, sometimes. ( On the plus side, he's finally ginger. )Gone Native

Fandom: Doctor Who Pairing: Amy Pond/Rory Williams Length: 6753 words Author on LJ: sarah531 Author Website: Quite UnlikelyWhy this must be read: This isn't an easy fic to read (trigger warnings abound, check the author's note at the top), but it's well worth the investment. Following Kovarian and the Silence as the take and hold an unknowing Amy captive, this fic is creepy, detached, and self-aware in all the right ways. Small details add up to worldbuilding that fits in perfectly with canon--not just Moffat-era but RTD as well--and Amy's strength and fire are on full display here. The last section, with River, made me gasp. ( We, the agents of the Silence, united against the horror of the Question, do hereby make a vow to execute or otherwise destroy the being known as The Doctor. It may involve our deaths: we shall not falter. It may involve the murder of innocents: we shall not falter. It will involve the abduction and the injury of a child and its mother: we shall not falter.
We are not fools. )Things They Talked About In The Playground

Fandom: Doctor Who Pairing: Amy Pond/Rory Williams Length: ~2K words Author on LJ: _starrystarryAuthor Website: TumblrWhy this must be read: You know when you get caught up on a new fandom, and there are a bunch of fic ideas that you just want to read right now? I watched "Let's Kill Hitler" and was promptly desperate for some sort of five-times-Melody-raised-her-parents or just more of the three of them in Leadworth. Plenty of authors have since obliged, but this little beauty was the first and best one I found (made all the sweeter by the fact that it's the author's fault I started watching Doctor Who in the first place). I love her grasp of the characters here, particularly Rory, and Melody's strangely functional mix of madness and, well, being the ultimate Amy/Rory shipper. It's a lovely piece, beautifully written, and worth a click. ( The whole thing dissolves in a screaming match, while Rory sighs with the world-weariness of a pensioner and looks out on the game the boys are playing. )Wouldn't You Love to Love Her? - Mood: sleepy

Fandom: Doctor Who Pairing: River Song/The Doctor, Amy Pond/Rory Williams, Martha Jones/Mickey Smith, Ninth Doctor/Rose Tyler Length: ~95K words Author on LJ: irony_rocksAuthor Website: Master listWhy this must be read: James Bond-style spy AU featuring the whole NewWho gang. Do I really need to say more? (In case I do: Irony's one of those authors who writes almost everything better than almost anyone, and this entry is no exception. When I found "A Game of Equals" for the first time, I literally disrupted my entire Sunday to keep reading it. That awesome. The translation of all the characters into a spy setting is delightful--I particularly love the code names to distinguish between the AU versions of the Doctors.) ( He grinned. Oh, he already liked her. Shame he was going to have to throw her back in prison. )A Game of Equals

Fandom: Doctor Who Pairing: Amy Pond/Rory Williams Length: 5389 words Author on LJ: kaydeefalls Author Website: DreamwidthWhy this must be read: This post-TATM five-things story will make you grin through any lingering Pond!feels you have, trust me. Although it doesn't take the "P.S." minisode into account, this is definitely one of those "headcanon accepted" stories for me. In it, Amy and Rory to have an absolutely fantastic life, and they (mostly unaware) meet a few familiar faces along the way. I'm not sure if 4 or 5 is my favorite part, but 3 is also awesome and 1 and 2 are pitch-perfect, and the bonus section will leave you with a smile on your face. ( The doctor inside is...not what either of them expected. She's young, for starters, about their age if that, and she's black. And female. Maybe 1930 in New York City is more progressive than Amy would've expected. She also feels clearly off in this place, like the blonde but different, in a way Amy can't quite put her finger on. )The Pond Continuum

Fandom: Doctor Who Pairing: River Song/The Doctor, Amy Pond/Rory Williams Length: 16,413 words Author on LJ: Unknown Author Website: NamesakeWhy this must be read: One of the frustrations of "The Power of Three" was that we were supposed to believe the Doctor had more or less hung around the Ponds' house for a year without once seeing River--and from Amy's point of view, no less. This clever and emotional take on the "Year of the Slow Invasion" not only fixes that issue--it also takes the idea of "fixing" to a whole new level. Bonus points for the short and sweet epilogue, lovely characterizations, crackling dialogue, and a much-needed dose of heat. ( Even though he married our daughter, he never stood still long enough to become part of our real lives. Come to think of it, neither did she. As much as Mels was a constant presence in my life until I was 22, in the 10 years after that, River breezed in and out as much as the Doctor did. )Ossia and Encore to the Square Root of Three - Mood: annoyed

I fell headfirst into Doctor Who last summer and am psyched to be at the wheel (console?) for this month. Get ready for lots of recently-written Pond!feels, with a smattering of RTD-era angst mixed in. But let's start with the frothy goodness that only light crack can bring...allons-y! Fandom: Doctor Who Pairing: Gen (background canonical pairings) Length: 3550 words Author on LJ: paperclipbitchAuthor Website: Master listWhy this must be read: You know how sometimes you'll see a rec that says "THIS IS THE BEST THING EVAR!!!1!!1!" and you sort of roll your eyes? Well, check your skepticism at the door, because this gem is quite possibly actually the best thing ever. It's a coffee shop AU wherein Oswin Oswald (AotD version) hangs out with Sally and Larry (from "Blink"), totally ships RPF Amy/Rory, and fangirls hard about the Avengers, the "Phonebox Angels," and Wincest vs. Destiel. Like I said, pretty much the best thing ever. ( Has anyone ever mentioned to you how much you look like Carey Mulligan? )Do You Wanna Date My Avatar

Fandom: DOCTOR WHO Pairing: Gen, Amy/Rory, Doctor Tardis (Maybe a little Amy/Rory/Doctor) Length: 1760 Author on LJ: black_eyedgirlAuthor Website: Ao3Why this must be read: Rory hears noises in the TARDIS late at night. He goes to investigate, and tries to have a serious conversation.Post ‘The Doctor’s Wife’. For my last Doctor Who rec, I wanted something a little reflective, and I realized I hadn't done a Eleven-Amy-Rory only trio fic this month, and I do miss their dynamics a little. The Doctor seems a little lost after Idris becomes the Tardis again. Rory and Amy are there for him as they deal with the Doctor's love of bunk beds and try to re frame the Doctor's relationship with the Tardis into something their human minds can comprehend. It's a coda fic so it's very mellow and quiet but works really well in the context of the episode. Answering Noises in the Night

Vidder: kiki-miserychic Musical Artist unknown Dead Space videogame developer Length: 1:29 Vidder on LJ: kiki_miserychicVidder Website: Why this vid must be viewed:Amy's mind holds a living mental image and anything that holds the image of angel becomes an angel.Aaaaand the Weeping Angels just got a whole lot creepier. This is just brilliantly executed horror, and it just elevates the "The Time of Angels" / "Flesh and Stone" episodes to something that might put your teeth on edge. The juxtaposition of the adapted lullaby with Amy Pond looking so young lost really makes it seem like she's walking through a forest of monsters- and the song makes The Doctor seem so much creepier as well. twinkle, twinkle

Fandom: DOCTOR WHO Pairing: Doctor / Master Length:2000+ Author on LJ: fahye_ficAuthor Website: fahye_ficWhy this must be read: The only problem with playing a game you invented, against the person you invented it with, is that if you wish to use an unfamiliar move then first you have to convince your opponent that it always existed: they've simply forgotten it. So much physics and math and chemistry to explain the relationship between the Doctor and the Master, and it all comes out beautifully poetic. The Master's trapped on the TARDIS with only the Doctor to poke at. The fic seems to place place at some point past 'Last of the Time Lords' but it doesn't make too many references to those episodes, or even their specific regenerations and instead seems to preset their base time lord selves. Fandom: DOCTOR WHO Pairing: Gen Length: 9000+ Author on LJ:Author Website: Ao3Why this must be read:It has been suggested that after his eighth regeneration, the Doctor begins lying about his age. The official explanation is that he has simply lost track. This is a third possible explanation for the discrepancy between his ages in the new and old series. This fic explores the time war and is a lovely bridge between new-Who and classic-Who timelines. There are some brilliantly imagined snapshots of that the Time War was like, some memories of it while the Doctor runs about with Rose and Martha, and a brilliant scene concerned with the Doctor’s final decision regarding that war. Just a lovely character piece while serving as a great back story for the universe we have now. Time v.3.0

Fandom: DOCTOR WHO (TORCHWOOD) & DISCWORLD Pairing: Jack / Death Length: 3800+ Author on LJ: perryvic and googlebratAuthor Website: Why this must be read:EXCUSE ME, he said, not impolitely. BUT YOU ARE HOLDING UP THE END OF THE UNIVERSE.Well, after the craziness of the day in my city, I was more in the mood for slightly crack-y fic to keep the mood light.. I’ve seen a couple fics now where Jack interacts with Death (the fun Discworld version of the reaper), but this one is cracky and angsty and fits Jack’s character to a T. Of course Jack would flirt with the Reaper. Jack, being the fixed immortal being that he is, is a bit of an obstacle for Death, who wants to go ahead and reap the Universe. This Is How The Universe Ends

Fandom: DOCTOR WHO Pairing: Gen Length: 13k+ Author on LJ: snubnosedsilAuthor Website: AO3Why this must be read: “Do-“ Rory seemed to reconsider, then barreled ahead with his question. “This is a silly question, but, do you have a dad, River?”I didn't get this fandom assignment in June, but hey, good stories can be read at any time. Or saved until it feels appropriate. River goes to see Rory (and later Brian) for Father’s Day every year. At first, it’s even before Rory (and Amy) know who exactly River is. And it’s the most unconventional father-daughter relationship ever, even more once Brian makes an appearance. But there’s something sweet in the way River’s written, gallivanting around the universe on adventures and still wanting to sit down with her father and chat once in awhile. The story goes to post Angels Take Manhattan. Father's Day
