Why this must be read: Because everything this author writes is worth reading. She writes in a few fandoms, but for me she was born to write these two – especially Jim. I love her Jim POV stories. This one has such a melancholy start, but bear with her. The author herself gives no warnings for this fic, so it’s tricky to review this without giving too much away. Suffice to say that it begins with Jim watching an empty casket being lowered into the ground..
What I especially love is the wealth of anthropological tidbits she weaves in via Blair’s voice in Jim’s head. It’s just beautifully done. And her Jim.. aw, you juat ache for him here, and will him to keep going.
He and Blair had never had anything like that. They lived together, sure, but they didn't have a physical relationship, weren't even close to being married, and so the idea he could just up and die from missing Blair was absurd to the extreme. But the numbness that had started at the river had spread to Jim's face. It felt like he had frostbite, as if the skin of his cheeks and forehead was dead. And everything looked darker.
Like he was losing the light.
