Why this must be read:

This fic crosses Highlander with Numb3rs, which is a crossover I hadn't seen before. It starts out mainly with the Numb3rs characters and then shifts to Highlander territory. It's fun to see the Numb3rs crew try to make sense of the oddness that is immortality, what with decapitations, lightning, and a ... giant Tesla coil?

Young immortals are challenging MacLeod in uncommonly large numbers, and Joe, Methos, and MacLeod cannot figure out why. What's worse is that all the strange deaths are attracting the attention of the FBI, which brings in Don and Charlie Eppes and company. The FBI thinks MacLeod is going around cutting off people's heads, and MacLeod is trying to solve the real mystery. Naturally, the two groups work at cross purposes while the real mastermind plots in the background.

Everyone from both shows is in character, and none of the voices ring false. This is a well-plotted, well-told murder mystery involving characters we know and like. It's a good, fun read.

MacLeod turned his attention from the mouth of the alley to the token in his hand. He looked up with a smile that was more fatalistic than Methos could honestly say he was comfortable with. "We have a plan."

"Am I going to like this plan?"

"There's little to no chance you'll lose your head."

Methos looked at him for a long moment and decided now was probably not the time to begin a searching inquiry into what –- exactly -- he could expect to lose. Instead, he nodded. "In principle, I like this plan."

"If they have Joe, they'll have his notebook, right?"

"I'd imagine so. Agent Granger certainly noticed Joe trying to hide it, so I imagine that would have interested him. It's ciphered and they have a mathematical genius standing around doing nothing, so..."

"Is he good enough to crack it?"

"Possibly, parts of it. But the codes Joe –- the Watchers –- use have been in development for ... a very long time. Half of them involve dead languages that aren't even recorded anywhere, now. I suppose he may be able to get names, locations –- they'll be easier."

"It just needs to be enough for him to figure out where to send his people. If he has a proper list of locations, he can make some educated guesses."

"You want him to crack it?"

MacLeod nodded. "And if he doesn't, I want you to find him and help him. Give me a few hours and then get them on that line, one way or another."

"And suddenly I find myself liking the plan so much less. I'm too pretty to go to jail, MacLeod."

Thanks for reccing a Numb3rs fic! The fandom doesn't get much love on this comm.

LD's a lovely person too so I'm glad she's getting recognized for playing in my fandom a little.

P.S. The lead characters' last name is spelled Eppes, not Epps.

Why would you lose the ability to edit the entry?

(Nice Vermeer icon BTW!)

Interesting! I suppose with as many reccers as CV has I guess it makes sense they only give out posting access during people's rec periods.

Here's hoping someone else recs Numb3rs this year!
