Fandom: DUE SOUTH
Pairing: Benton Fraser/Ray Kowalski, Benton Fraser/Others
Length: Long – 8,190 words

innocentsmith
Author Website: Fic tag
Why this must be read: this is another excellent story that came out of this year's ds_match, this time for Team Reality, which really should have won, in my humble opinion...
This is Fraser's story. This is Fraser's life, from growing up in the wild places of the far north to the long, almost unbearable days in Chicago. This is Fraser's love, all those people, deserving or not, who he has given his heart to.
innocentsmith has a beautiful way with words not often seen in fanfiction. The story-telling is lyrical and eloquent, subtly shading in the details of the characters in a way that makes them come to life. A wonderful read that's very true to Fraser.
Just the bright air around them as they searched for his pack, the shining black of a lone raven flying above, were too much, let alone the thick curls of her hair, the classic structure of a face he recognized from so many old photographs of much older statues. That was what beauty looked like, he thought. And almost suspected her for it. Mostly he was overwhelmed, as ravenous for her as he was for the food they devoured there in the snow. He knew he would have to turn her in. He knew, too, that these rations they consumed now would stick in his throat every time another woman turned her face up for his kiss.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-11 05:47 pm (UTC)(link)The author left out Ray Vecchio's love for Fraser, and that love is immensely important in canon. Fraser would never have been able to grow to love Kowalski (as a friend or otherwise) if he had not been loved by RayV (as a friend or otherwise) first!
I don't know how you can recommend a story that ignores two seasons worth of canon and pushes poor RayV to the side - as if his love for Fraser just wasn't important. The author does mention RayV several times, but he seems largely like an afterthought to the author, who is an admitted F/K shipper. It looks suspeciously like he or she is trying to erase RayV's existence to make the case for F/K. That is just unacceptable, and the mark of someone who's not a true dS fan!
F/K slash is NOT all that there is to Due South - the platonic love between two males friends is the heart and soul of the series. Slash is just something that fans made up, and it does NOT fit in with the actual show.
