Why this must be read: The Five Years Gone-verse is a great venue to play in, exploring how the characters - here, specifically Matt and Mohinder - become who they are and what they're capable of.
Flashbacking through their relationships with each other and Molly this is an excellent depiction of how their slippery slopes and limits differ and pull them apart. It loops off some of the questions from FYG and, though written before the recent volumes, is still a very very plausible heading.
The background threads of Hiro and Nathan!Sylar work well in themselves as well as ties to the larger world and consequences. It's bittersweet - really showing how they don't fit together anymore, but things aren't quite working apart and the regrets that remain are as solid a link as the good times.
“That flying son of a bitch,” Matt said. “He’s going to sell the rest of us out to protect his own skin.”
“He has a point, though,” I said. “If I can cure this, then I can save a lot of people.”
“Molly doesn’t need to be cured. I don’t need to be cured,” he said.
“Even if it would save your life?” I asked. He didn’t say anything, so I continued. “Even if your sacrifice meant that thousands, maybe millions of other lives were saved by eliminating those few of you who aren’t good people? Besides, if I don’t go to work for him, then he might start to dig up information on me. How long before he finds out that I’m hiding you and Molly?”
“I don’t think that working for him will be the best way to keep him out of your personal life.”
