Hi, I’m idella, and I’ll be reccing X-Files fic this month. Please accept my apologies for the late start. (I gave up fic for Lent. This turned out to be an inconvenient decision.)

The stories I rec will likely be short ones that include at least a couple of my favourite things to be found in XF fic: Scully, angst, humour, flawed heroes, sympathetic villains, messy love triangles, wild rides, and pleasing uses of language.

Fandom: THE X-FILES
Pairing: None
Length: 13k
Author on LJ: unknown
Author Website: Livia's Ink Spot
Why this must be read:

This is a short, sharp Scully pov set just after she kills Donnie Pfaster. Unlike most post-Orison stories worth reading, this one doesn’t focus on Mulder and Scully’s relationship, or even Scully’s hard-core emotional flailing (what there is of the latter occurs mainly off-screen, so to speak). Instead – and this is what I love about it – Scully takes what she’s done and examines it in the context of her work, especially the dark work ahead of her.

My fingers should be knitted together, twisting and strangling one another in their restless attempts to flee my hands toward freedom.

My stomach should writhe in a nest of knots, turning sickeningly each time I approach the thought of what will come next.

My eyes should cloud with tears of anger, frustration, and fear.

Of all the times I have faced my actions and those of others, this should be the one that breaks my spirit, robbing me of the strength to continue.

It does not, despite the reality that I have just confessed to committing the crime of murder.

My hands lie flat and loose atop my uncrossed legs. My stomach is calm and settled. My eyes are dry and my vision is clear.

I am free.
