Gingersnaps for Oedipus by OneMillionAndNine (NC-17)

Fandom: THE X-FILES
Pairing: Mulder/Scully, Mulder/Teena Mulder (UST)
Length: 35k
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] onemillionnine
Author Website: XF Fanfic - OneMillionAndNine
Why this must be read:

OneMillionAndNine has called this fic “yet another take on the first time for our heroes”. What sets this apart from hundreds of other takes on the same theme is, of course, how they get there. It starts with Mulder’s maudlin reminiscences of the good old days with his good old mom, and it’s to OneMillionAndNine’s credit that nearly everything that follows, however edgy or unlikely, seems entirely plausible.

As promised in the introduction, it’s a “veritable angst-o-rama”, but it’s also a lot of fun. OneMillionAndNine has a wonderfully vibrant writing style, along with a wicked sense of humour. Her sardonic, self-aware Mulder is a particular treat.

Everyone knows I hate Freud. I hate Freud
because he was right. Right about this, at
least, about me. Pretty much every woman I
have ever slept with has been a substitute
for her. Every one I've ever wanted -
Diana, Phoebe, various and sundry nameless
whoevers, some of whom I managed to get it
up for. Sundry is right. Kind of
ridiculous how jealous Scully gets
sometimes, when the truth is, a sexual
experience with me is not unlike Sacramento
as described by Gertrude Stein: there is no
there, there.

Even Scully - and if I'm honest with myself
for half a second, I have to admit that what
pathetic emotional life I have revolves
around Scully - reminds me of my mom. She
may not be another, tall, dark, and cool
Teena knock-off but she has that same sort
of sad distance to her, something inside her
permanently beyond my reach.

LOOOOOOOOOVVVVEEEEE. This was one of the first fics I read when I got into the fandom, and even though I'm pretty removed from it now, I'll go back and read it because it's so perfect.

What a great choice. It is both very dark and very funny. I don't know too many writers who can pull that off with such style.
