Why this must be read:
There have been a lot of fics based on reactions to Steve Rogers’ death, but this is the only one I know of that deals with two very important people in Steve’s life who weren’t heavily involved in the comics at the time of his death: Wanda Maximoff and Clint Barton.
This fic is creative and fascinating, and a very different take on Steve Rogers’ funeral (written, it’s important to note, the day after Captain America #25 came out, and therefore before his canon burial). It’s also touching and sad and (like most fics about Wanda based on recent comics) a little bit creepy. I encourage anyone who’s a fan of any of these characters to read this, but I especially encourage Wanda fans to do so. Her story here is sad, but it’s fitting, and you can see how she used to be one of the Marvel Universe’s greatest heroes.
With the crowd it was easy for the couple to blend in. A young man and woman, dressed in black like everyone else. The man wore a simple suit and a hat pulled down over his eyes. He'd never stood out in street clothes but assumed security would be tight and wanted to avoid recognition. It was more vital still for his companion to be missed. She was dressed very simply as well and a dark half cloak was pulled up over her hair and eyes. She stayed beside him, hiding in his shadow as agreed. When they encountered the crowds she crept closer still, overwhelmed by the noise of a thousand people trying to be silent.
