Point of View and Breaking Point by Jin (PG-13)
Fandom: THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN
Pairing: None
Length: ~12,000 & ~23,000
Author on LJ: Unknown
Author Website: JIN's stories on Blackraptor
Why this must be read:
There's not a lot of exploration of story telling technique in this fandom; my guess is that just keeping seven major characters in line is enough for most of us. AUs, yes, we do those, but most of what we put on the page is straight, linear prose.
In these two stories, Jin breaks from this tradition. Vin's been shot, but by whom? And is the truth best never revealed? What's the cost?
A taste of 'Point of View':
I love stormy nights – and this night was awesome. I’m sure Buck didn’t think that. I’m sure he was scared to death, even though he’d deny it. He’d tell you that he’s not afraid of a little, itty bitty storm – but he’d be lying. He practically shivers in his boots when it storms. Damn funny is what it is.
But I guess that has nothing at all to do with what happened that night.
A taste of 'Breaking Point':
"Burgers okay with you, Vin?" I ask him, even though I know what his answer will be. I can see that he’s trying not to sigh, but it’s there anyway . . . silently screaming at me. He doesn’t care and he wishes I wouldn’t go through the motions of asking. Just do it, he’s saying to me, just fix whatever the hell you want because I don’t care.
"Yeah."
It’s me who sighs out loud. I don’t know how much longer we can go on like this. We don’t play games, Vin and I. We never have. But ever since the shooting, we’re like cats on a hot tin roof . . . tip toeing around each other as if the slightest poorly put phrase could somehow tear apart this tenuous grip we have on our friendship.
It’s all about guilt.
