Why this must be read: This story is set between the cracks of canon during "Lies My Parents Told Me". Spike's confrontation with Wood sparks emotional upheaval, and leads to an entirely different sort of confrontation with Buffy. This story makes the whole episode more satisfying, both emotionally and narratively, and manages to leave its own stamp on canon in the best possible way. The characterizations are thoughtful and excellent, the dialogue is strong, and there are lovely phrases like "the white-tiled abattoir of his hope" sprinkled throughout. The relationship
kcarolj65 depicts between Buffy and Spike is as complex and full of baggage as it is in canon; she does not take the easy way out and gloss over these issues, but instead works on resolving them in ways that feel real and make sense.
