All Day Permanent Red by Smirnoffmule (PG-13)

Greetings, Crack_vanners! I'm [livejournal.com profile] likeadeuce and I'll be driving the Marvel van for the month of May. A few themes are likely to emerge over the course of the month -- X-Men! Angst! An Avenger or two! Also with angst! -- but mostly I'll be doing my best to rec awesome stories by talented people. In honor of the new Wolverine movie opening today I'm starting out with a story about everybody's favorite beclawed Canadian. I apologize that all my Wolverine icons are slightly ridiculous, as this story deserves better.

Fandom: MARVEL COMICS
Pairing: Logan (Wolverine)/OMC
Length: ~3,500 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] smirnoffmule
Author Website: Fic journal is [livejournal.com profile] equus_vodka
Why this must be read:

In whatever version of Wolverine canon you prefer, Logan has lived a long and varied life. This circumstance gives writers an extraordinary opportunity to explore different times and places through the lens of the character, and rarely have I seen this feat accomplished with as much skill and emotional resonance as [personal profile] smirnoffmule demonstrates here. This is a story of World War II as Logan saw it, and also the story of his relationship with a memorable and fully realized OC. This writing shies away from easy sentimentality, never letting us forget that these are hardened, violent men, yet at the same time showing us their capacity for sensuality and tenderness.

Excerpt:

They sit together on the mess hall steps, pretending the weak sunshine has some warmth to bask in. Bob is watching a soccer match across the courtyard, calling out from time to time in encouragement or dismay. Some of the guys shout back at him – it is all good natured, and for Logan, a comfortable background buzz. He is concentrating on rolling cigarettes, thinks his first effort is pretty okay until he goes to light it, and only the paper catches. The whole thing comes apart between his fingers in one limp flare.

“Aw, crap,” he says.

Bob reclaims his tobacco, tactfully without remark, and rolls one for the both of them, cupping it in his hands against the wind to light it. They pass it back and forth between them, the closest they can come to public intimacy.

My favorite part is how it ends, but I don't want to give it all away.
