All new!! Friday Night Drive-In!

Sorry for the short notice here, but tomorrow we’re going to trial run what I hope will be a new monthly feature – Friday Night Drive-In, a.k.a. Fan Vid Recs.

Reccers may post 1 vid rec for their fandom, formatted as follows:

Subject Line: VID REC: Fandom - Song Title

Song Title/Artist:
Pairing:
Vidder:
Vidder on LJ:
Vidder's website:
Warnings: (explicit lyrics, graphic images, etc.)
Why this vid kicks ass:

Because the vidder community has some unique ownership issues, it’s important that reccers be extra careful when making vid recs. Depending on the vidder’s preferences regarding public access to their work, please link your rec in the appropriate manner:

1. If the video is publicly accessible, direct link to the web page the vid is linked on, or if it’s the vidder’s request, to the HTML splash page of their site.

or…

2. Link to the site with instructions on acquiring the password, if the site is protected – do not reveal the password yourselves.

or…

3. Provide contact info for the vidder if their vids are only available privately (tapes, dvd-R’s, collections, etc.).

Do not:
Hotlink, i.e. link directly to the video file rather than the webpage.
Re-upload videos that a vidder has removed from the web.
Delay in removing a vid rec if requested to do so by the vidder.

Bottom line, please respect the wishes of the individual vidder regarding how their work is distributed and rec’d!

Uhm. Warnings for explicit lyrics and images etc., if necessary? No?

And also, why the vid is interesting/the best thing in the whole wide world!

And, uhm, *tomorrow* is Drive In night??

[identity profile] stopawhile.livejournal.com 2004-03-25 09:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, no. That's great. Okay. :)

p.s. You going to archive them tomorrow? Or I can, whatever's best for you, my sweets.

This is just a suggestion and I have no idea whether it would be practical/desirable, but anyway. I'm very interested in vid recs but largely uninterested in fic - so I don't really want to friend the community, but have a feeling I'll end up forgetting to check in on the last Friday of every month. Would it be possible for you to post on [livejournal.com profile] vidding whenever vid reccing time rolls around again? Or would that be impractical or annoying to do? If so, I'm just going to have to get myself organised and keep track of the Fridays, because I think the whole vid reccing thing sounds like a great idea and I'm already looking forward to it. Thankyou for setting it up!

Ah, that'll be perfect. Thankyou very much!

Can any one post... or are the 'drivers' of the fic-recs responsible for selecting a vid for their paricular fandom?

No Tape Recs Please...

Fic recs don't normally include zines -- so why would the Vidrecs allow for videos that are not available on the 'net?

I'm all for making the recs -- but at least give people a real shot at seeing the recommended items.

People are much more sensitive about vid linking than fic linking, so I'd recommend that it be mandatory for the reccers to obtain permission from the vidder prior to reccing.

Free for all?

Can anyone post vid recs or do we need to have signed up somewhere?

Waldo.

I wouldn't mind more than one vid rec. Perhaps, as with crossovers, recommenders can be strongly encouraged to do one vid rec per month, but not be prohibited from making them at other times?

Thanks for all the work putting this together, and I really admire your responsiveness to community requests!

I'm really pleased you're doing this! It's a great idea - vidding has become much more prevalent and popular as the technology has become more accessible and lots more people are doing it.

Regarding the linking policy - surely if a vid is on an open website and openly linked to from that site then that should be taken as an invite for people to view it and link to it with no extra permission being required? I know that's the view I take on my own vidding site. If, however, the vidder operates a policy of viewing by permission only, or if the vid is on a blind URL that isn't linked to from anywhere else, and cannot be reached unless you've been sent the link by email, then the maker of the vid should be contacted to see if they mind the link being given out.

Just my thoughts - there might be some other privacy issue that I'm not aware of.

LINKING TO VIDS

[personal profile] luminosity 2004-03-26 07:07 am (UTC)(link)
JMO, of course, but I like the way the Buffy Music Video Database handles the links. Link to the main vid page. That allows the viewer to see what else is up there, and it discourages "click and stream" viewing, which eats up more bandwidth (ultimately) than the tried and true "right click to save."

Great idea, and I know you said that you wouldn't do this, but I'd like to second that it is also a great idea to link to the vidding community LJ, which doesn't see nearly enough action.

[face palm]

Forget everything I said about linking to the web page. I reread the entry and I'm an idiot. :)

Dude, art recs as well!

[identity profile] stungunbilly.livejournal.com 2004-03-26 07:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm completely "Dude, so happy!" excepting that recs for vids one can't access are completely annoying, IMHO.
Otherwise, golden.

Understood; and again, this whole scene is quite grand in general.

I see I'm in the vast minority so I just wanted to explain why I picked "no." I have nothing against vidding, but I can't get vids to play on my computer so it's just going to be a waste of a post for me.

Anyway, I do appreciate you asking the reccers to include the words VID REC in the subject; that will be very helpful for people like me who will want to skip over those.
