Why this must be read:

This is one of those stories that has haunted me from the day I read it. Jim's been at a conference for a week, and he returns home to find Blair... completely unstrung. Seems Blair thinks Jim's dead. Of course, as is often the case with our boys, it's slightly more complicated than that. Jim is simultaneously warmed and terrified by Blair's complete disintegration in the face of his supposed death, and there's some lovely tender moments while he tries to help Blair regain his equilibrium and get to the bottom of what's going on.

I think one of the things I like the most about this is that you never do really get the whole story about what happened. I just love stories like that, that explain enough to satisfy you but leave enough bits hanging that you're intrigued. It's not a cliffhanger, or a WiP or anything; the author said she was going to write the story from Blair's POV but unfortunately, as far as I know she isn't writing in the fandom anymore. So you'll just have to make up your own explanations.

Nudging the door open, he stayed behind the cover of the wall until he could see that Blair was the room's only occupant. His roommate was huddled in the corner of the room, slowly rocking into the wall so that the back of his head beat a dull percussion against the plaster.

"Chief?"

There was no reaction, and Jim felt another icy chill crawl down his spine. The loft had been ransacked, and this...this was scary. Keeping his gun in hand, Jim moved over to crouch a few feet from his partner. After a long moment of silence, the figure in the corner slowly raised its head.

"Jesus, Blair. What the hell happened?" Jim was horrified by what he saw in Blair's eyes. Bloodshot eyes stared out of the pinched mask of his partner's face. Deep midnight-blue shadows under his eyes made him look sickeningly like the junkies Jim often encountered in the course of his work.

Every once in a while someone on a list will recommend this story and I go back to re-read it. It is on par with the other unexplanable canon moments where you just have to let go and accept. Disturbing but good.

Three gen recs in a row and all good ones -- impressive!
