Why this must be read:
One last Jean Grey story before I move on. There's a nice group of fics about the Scott/Jean/Emma triangle, but relatively few that focus on the Jean/Emma relationship independent from Scott. This story by
sionnain, set during the Morrison New X-Men period when Jean and Emma are teammates, acknowledges the love triangle they're involved in but makes clear that's not what it's all about. It's not even really about sex (although this very much a sexy story). Jean and Emma are two powerful women who are each in a position to understand the other better than either one can understand herself. Emma's viewpoint here provides some of the best insight I've read into a Jean who is at once powerful and dangerous, and tremendously conflicted about that power.
Emma looks up at the sky. In Genosha, the stars were different. Are different, she corrects herself angrily. Emma has the sudden thought that the night sky here is all wrong. She shivers from a chill that's bone-deep, and wonders why something so simple should affect her so strongly. The stars look the same in Genosha as they always have, she reminds herself sternly.
Unbidden, the thought arises like a ghost. It's just there's no one left to see them.
"My father used to tell me stars were made out of diamonds," Emma says quietly. "I didn't believe it when I found out they were made out of fire. They looked too cold to burn."
"They don't look cold. Not up close."
Emma looks over at Jean, surprised. Jean's voice sounds faraway. Emma is not trying to read Jean's mind but she is still picking up something. Guilt. Tension. Loneliness? It's clinging to her like a scent, almost. Jean's unhappy. Maybe she's not here to look at stars to relax. Maybe it's a penance for her. Stargazing. Perhaps Jean is the penitent one . .
