Why this must be read?: What I personally like about Torchwood is the darkness that bubbles to the surface. This story explores a dark "what if" that is very intriguing. They are both lonely men. It was written early in the Torchwood lifespan, but it still holds up.
Jack Harkness is an extremely lonely man. Ianto knows because he told him.
Jack doesn't know that Ianto knows. The ritual is the same every time - a stressful day, or a slow day, or a day where Jack stares into the distance and holds the jar close, and at the end of the day when Suzie and Toshiko and Owen head home, Jack makes a pot of coffee.
Now that Ianto remembers, he can look out for it - a sleight of hand when he prepares the coffee, the quick glance as he hands the mug to him. And they sit, and Jack tells him.
