Teal'c's five favorite board games by Paian (PG)
Fandom: STARGATE SG-1
Pairing: None
Length: ~2800 words
Author on LJ:
paian
Author Website: http://paian.dreamwidth.org/tag/fic:+all+fic
Why this must be read:
Paian uses a seemingly innocuous Five Things prompt to delve into Teal'c (his thoughts on his life on Earth, his history, his approach to life) in a way few writers in Stargate fandom ever manage to do. Wonderfully written and perfectly characterized Teal'c.

These are 20 kinds of fabulous. The Chess one, the contrast to checkers, and especially Snakes and Ladders (always snakes, never chutes, in our house). You use the seemingly innocuous landscapes of boardgames to explore both the culture Teal'c comes from and the culture he finds himself in, which is one of the things I find so cool about Teal'c as a character, the way he is positioned between them.
I love this: "he himself had been the arrow whose chance pointing had caused the fall of Daniel Jackson's wife; and that fall was neither exhilarating, nor happy, nor over, and he did not believe there would be any rising from it."
And I love love LOVE the image of Teal'c sitting alone with Snakes and Ladders, playing a game of persistence. I'd thought of the game as a morality play, but never as a treatise on stoicism!

Just... yay!
