Why this must be read:
I believe a lot of stories are based on a frozen moment in time, one moment from which we extrapolate in a direction where Real Life (TM) may not choose to follow. This story was written in 2002, and takes Lance in a direction he didn't follow. It's not the happy-go-lucky boy or the snarky bitch or the evil-overlord-in-training.
But it's potent. It's the first part of the 'Pretender' series, which leads Lance down the road to self-destruction. 'In a Mood' shows us Lance weighed down by troubles, unable to find what he needs; he turns to self-harm and rages in his desperation. The story presents him so convincingly, how he can feel this way, why he does what he does, what he wants and dreads. The last line...
He's pretty sure that he could just force himself to sleep and wake up and everything would be back in nice, little mental boxes he could not think about. So, he tries. He strips to boxers and a shirt because the fucking heat is broken and it's just one more thing. He strides into the bathroom and gets out his razor because they have a photo shoot at seven in the morning, and if he shaves tonight it will be easier to get ready in the morning. He has an old fashioned razor, inherited from his grandfather and it usually calms him to use it.
The Pretender series as a whole is well worth reading (if you are in a strong mood, or else need something heartrending), but this story makes me understand these feelings in a way I didn't before I read it. However, please note: if you cannot bear to read about depression and self-harm, please don't read this.
