Why this must be read:

Sometimes it takes a while to realize how far you've come in your life. And then sometimes, when you do realize, you panic.

I'm going to be hopelessly pretentious for a second, but I think the word "panic" is key here, because it's exactly what Ray Kowalski has to fight through in this story. Classically, it's fear that comes as an epiphany: deep, debilitating, irrational. The terror of being alone in the wilderness, suddenly overwhelmed by something vast you hadn't really understood and can't control.

Ray Kowalski, who once said he got a skin condition if he went outside the city, is up in the Arctic Circle, alone with a bunch of dogs, a whole lot of snow, and his crazy partner. And the last item there is the real issue, because he's just...too far gone, here. He's on the edge of something that scares him.

[livejournal.com profile] arrow00's stories are always wonderful, passionately involving and psychologically true, but this is one of my very favorites. It's a post-CotW story and a Big Gay Freakout story, and both of these things have been done many times, but seldom as well.

(Also, it has my favorite name for RayK's turtle ever. Just, btw.)
